The paper describes an object recognition system, based on the cooperation of several visual modules (early vision, object detector, and object recognizer). The system is active because the behaviour of each module is tuned on the results given by other modules and internal models. This solution allows to detect inconsistencies and to generate a feedback process. The proposed strategy has shown...

In this paper, we report on the annotation procedures we developed for annotating the Turkish Discourse Bank (TDB), an effort that extends the Penn Discourse Tree Bank (PDTB) annotation style by using it for annotating Turkish discourse. After a brief introduction to the TDB, we describe the annotation cycle and the annotation scheme we developed, defining which parts of the scheme are an exten...

Mohamed Sobhi has been struggling to get into books for most of his life. Unable to read normal size text because of his low vision – a bilateral impairment that cannot be corrected by lenses, therapy or medical/surgical interventions – he started out by using photocopiers to enlarge the text, a time-consuming process that also generated reams of paper. When scanners came along he dispensed wit...

We address the subtask of generating whyquestions from texts and propose the use of causal relations annotated in the Penn Discourse TreeBank for evaluating contentselection methods for why-question generation. Our initial experiments show that 71% of an independently developed data set of whyquestions can be correlated with causal relations annotated in the PDTB.

New sunspot data composites, some of which are radically different in the character of their long-term variation, are evaluated over the interval 1845–2014. The method commonly used to calibrate historic sunspot data, relative to modern-day data, is “daisy-chaining,” whereby calibration is passed from one data subset to the neighboring one, usually using regressions of the data subsets for the ...
