Four 2,2’-dipyridylindane-1,3-dione 2,2’-dimers with various substituents and orientations of the pyridine rings were synthesized. Detailed analyses found that only chloro derivative affords 1D-channel-containing open-type structure. This study revealed how atomic geometry around N-atom affects selective formation desired channel-containing structure, opening door for further utilization 1,3-in...

Reduction of scandium nitride clusterfullerene, Sc3N@Ih-C80, by sodium fluorenone ketyl in the presence of cryptand[2,2,2] allows the crystallization of the {cryptand[2,2,2](Na(+))}2(Sc3N@Ih-C80(-))2·2.5C6H4Cl2 (1) salt. The Sc3N@Ih-C80˙(-) radical anions are dimerized to form single-bonded (Sc3N@Ih-C80(-))2 dimers.

The reaction of tetraarylbutatrienes (tetraaryl[3]cumulenes) with tetracyanoethene (TCNE), a strong electron-accepting molecule, at room temperature yielded novel four-membered ring compounds (head-to-tail unsymmetrically substituted diarylallene dimers) by [2 + 2] cycloaddition of the central C=C bond of the butatrienes. This reaction proceeded through a head-to-head symmetrically substituted ...

1. The absorption spectra of deutero- and proto-ferrihaem in aqueous solution at 25 degrees C show marked changes with concentration and pH in the Soret band region. Quantitative studies of these phenomena imply that they are associated with ferrihaem dimerization and with protolytic equilibria involving monomeric (M) and dimeric (D) ferrihaem species according to the scheme: [Formula: see text...

In the crystal of K(3)H(SO(4))(2) or K(3)D(SO(4))(2), dimers SO(4)···H···SO(4) or SO(4)···D···SO(4) are linked by strong centrosymmetric hydrogen or deuterium bonds whose O···O length is ≈2.50 Å. We address two open questions. (i) Are H or D sites split or not? (ii) Is there any structural counterpart to the phase transition observed for K(3)D(SO(4))(2) at T(c) ≈ 85.5 K, which does not exist fo...

• The correlation of molecular shape and conformations with the Ntb phase transitional properties was investigated. onset transition temperatures turned out to be very sensitive these structural features. Observed differences were attributed changes in bend, which is only difference among dimers. In view importance features, particularly curvature, that form basis for appearance stabilization t...

Prior work by others has shown that insertion of psi (i.e., leader) sequences from the Moloney murine leukemia virus (MLV) genome into the 3' untranslated region of a nonviral mRNA leads to the specific encapsidation of this RNA in MLV particles. We now report that these RNAs are, like genomic RNAs, encapsidated as dimers. These dimers have the same thermostability as MLV genomic RNA dimers; li...

Overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) by inducible NO synthase (iNOS) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of many diseases. iNOS is active only as a homodimer. Dimerization of iNOS represents a potentially critical target for therapeutic intervention. In this study, we show that intracellular iNOS forms dimers that are "undisruptable" by boiling, denaturants, or reducing agents. Undisruptable...

Noncovalently "stacked" tetramethylrhodamine (TMR) dimers have been used to both report and perturb the allosteric equilibrium in GroEL. A GroEL mutant (K242C) has been labeled with TMR, close to the peptide-binding site in the apical domain, such that TMR molecules on adjacent subunits are able to form dimers in the T allosteric state. Addition of ATP induces the transition to the R state and ...

UV inactivation, photoreactivation, and dark repair of Escherichia coli and Cryptosporidium parvum were investigated with the endonuclease sensitive site (ESS) assay, which can determine UV-induced pyrimidine dimers in the genomic DNA of microorganisms. In a 99.9% inactivation of E. coli, high correlation was observed between the dose of UV irradiation and the number of pyrimidine dimers induce...
