Fatty acid composition has an important role in cellular structure and function. Inflammatory behavior of the airway epithelial cells can be changed due to the manipulation of their fatty acid content, which has a critical importance in asthma. The objective of the present study was to determine the fatty acid composition of human airway epithelial cells after co-culturing with eicosapentaenoic...

The synthesis of the marine natural product 1,6Z,9Z,12Z,15Z-octadecapentaen-3-one (1) has been achieved by two different routes starting from the ethyl esters of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), respectively. Using EPA ethyl ester as starting material the polyunsaturated vinyl ketone lipid 1 was obtained in 17% overall yield.

Algae oil from Schizochytrium sp. is one of the major natural sources ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), but its applications in foods are limited because unpleasant odor. The complex composition algae originates an odor profile that differs PUFA, i.e. docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). aim this work was to explore specific role DHA oxidation oil. According and characteristics, oxidized sunflowe...

Leukotriene (LT) B4 is a major chemical activator of PMN. Inhibitory effects of oral administration of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on LTB4 synthesis by PMN are known. We intravenously infused tridocosahexaenoyl-glycerol (DHA-TG) emulsion into rabbits in three different doses, namely 0.8, 0.4, or 0.2 g DHA/kg, and investigated the changes in LTB4/5 production by ionophore-activated PMN. The avera...

ω -3 Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), mainly present in fish oil, are part of the human diet. Among PUFAs, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has received particular attention for its anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, proapoptotic, antiangiogenetic, anti-invasion, and antimetastatic properties. These data suggest that DHA can exert antitumor activity potentially representing an effective adjuva...

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3), a polyunsaturated fatty acid found in fish oil, exerts cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. Although DHA was toxic toward five human cancer cell lines (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, SiHa, Raji, and DHL-4), the lines were not uniformly sensitive. DHL-4, a bcl-2 overexpressing lymphoid line, was the most sensitive (IC50, 5.2 micromol/L) and the cervical cancer cell line, ...

An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimal dietary docosahexaenoic acid/eisosapentaenoic acid (DHA/EPA) ratio of mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) supplied with n-3 LC-PUFA at two lipid levels. Eight isonitrogenous diets were formulated contain 7% and 12% crude lipid, each DHA/EPA ratios 0.6, 1.2, 2.3 3.2, respectively. Each diet randomly assigned triplicate groups 30 juvenile ...

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is important for brain function, however, the exact amount required for the brain is not agreed upon. While it is believed that the synthesis rate of DHA from α-linolenic acid (ALA) is low, how this synthesis rate compares with the amount of DHA required to maintain brain DHA levels is unknown. The objective of this work was to assess whether DHA synthesis from ALA is...

Intake of fish oil containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) prevents heart failure; however, the mechanisms are unclear. Mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) opening contributes to myocardial pathology in cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure, and treatment with DHA + EPA delays MPTP opening. Here, we assessed: 1) whether supplementation with both DHA a...
