This paper discusses the extensions that we have made to Betty’s Brain teachable agent system to help students learn about dynamic processes in a river ecosystem. Students first learn about dynamic behavior in a simulation environment, and then teach Betty by introducing cycles into the concept map representation. Betty’s qualitative reasoning mechanisms have been extended so that she can reaso...

The marine ecosystem is governed by a multitude of environmental cycles, all of which are linked to the periodical recurrence of the sun or the moon. In accordance with these cycles, marine species exhibit a variety of biological rhythms, ranging from circadian and circatidal rhythms to circalunar and seasonal rhythms. However, our current molecular understanding of biological rhythms and clock...

Necessary and sufficient conditions on n and A are given for the existence an edge-disjoint decomposition of AKn into copies of the graph of a 3-dimensional cube. Also, necessary and sufficient conditions on m, nand>' are given for similar decompositions of >'Km,n'

The fundamental group of a hyperbolic manifold acts on the limit set, giving rise to a cross-product C∗-algebra. We construct nontrivial K-cycles for the cross-product algebra, thereby extending some results of Connes and Sullivan to higher dimensions. We also show how the Patterson-Sullivan measure on the limit set can be interpreted as a center-valued KMS state.

Real food chains are very rarely investigated since long data sequences are required. Typically, if we consider that an ecosystem evolves with a period corresponding to the time for maturation, possessing few dozen of cycles would require to count species over few centuries. One well known example of a long data set is the number of Canadian lynx furs caught by the Hudson Bay company between 18...

Genetic variation in a population can sometimes arise so fast as to modify ecosystem dynamics. Such phenomena have been observed in natural predator-prey systems and characterized in the laboratory as showing unusual phase relationships in population dynamics, including a π phase shift between predator and prey (evolutionary cycles) and even undetectable prey oscillations compared to those of t...

The Velay sequence (France) provides a unique, continuous, palynological record spanning the last four climatic cycles. A pollen-based reconstruction of temperature and precipitation displays marked climatic cycles. An analysis of the climate and vegetation changes during the interglacial periods reveals comparable features and identical major vegetation successions. Although Marine Isotope Sta...

Symmetries of a partial Latin square are primarily determined by its autotopism group. Analogously to the case of Latin squares, given an isotopism Θ, the cardinality of the set PLSΘ of partial Latin squares which are invariant under Θ only depends on the conjugacy class of the latter, or, equivalently, on its cycle structure. In the current paper, the cycle structures of the set of autotopisms...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the amount and quality of scientific evidence supporting principles that are currently applied for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) performance. The scientific data concerning the effectiveness and safety of key principles of cardiopulmonary bypass is insufficient in both amount and quality to serve as a basis for practical, evidence-based guidelines.
