In this paper we discuss the applications of the Hamilton-Pontryagin variational principle for designing time-adaptive variational integrators. First, we review the multisymplectic formalism of field theories. Next, we review the Hamilton-Pontryagin principle and show how it can be used to handle time reparametrizations in a very natural way. Finally, we derive a time-adaptive variational integ...

This paper is devoted to study the multiplicity of nontrivial nonnegative or positive solutions to the following systems    −4pu = λa1(x)|u|q−2u + b(x)Fu(u, v), in Ω, −4pv = λa2(x)|v|q−2v + b(x)Fv(u, v), in Ω, u = v = 0, on ∂Ω, where Ω ⊂ R is a bounded domain with smooth boundary ∂Ω; 1 < q < p < N , p∗ = Np N−p ; 4pw = div(|∇w|p−2∇w) denotes the p-Laplacian operator; λ > 0 is a positive pa...

We give a simple proof of existence of solutions of the dispersion management and diffraction management equations for zero average dispersion, respectively diffraction. These solutions are found as maximizers of non-linear and non-local variational problems which are invariant under a large non-compact group. Our proof of existence of maximizer is rather direct and avoids the use of Lions’ con...

We prove a local variational principle of pressure for any given open cover. More precisely, for a given dynamical system (X,T ), an open cover U of X, and a continuous, realvalued function f on X, we show that the corresponding local pressure P (T, f ;U) satisfies P (T, f ;U) = sup{hμ(T,U) + ∫ X f(x)dμ(x) : μ is a T -invariant measure}, and moreover, the supremum can be attained by a T -invari...

We establish several set-valued function versions of Ekeland’s variational principle and hence provide some sufficient conditions ensuring the existence of error bounds for inequality systems defined by finitely many lower semicontinuous functions.

We show that, typically, lower semicontinuous functions on a Banach space densely inherit lower subderivatives of the same degree of smoothness as the norm. In particular every continuous convex function on a space with a Gâteaux (weak Hadamard, Fréchet) smooth renorm is densely Gâteaux (weak Hadamard, Fréchet) differentiable. Our technique relies on a more powerful analogue of Ekeland's variat...

Existence and multiplicity of weak solutions for an elliptic system is studied. By using Ekeland’s variational principle and the mountain pass theorem, we prove existence of at least three weak solutions. AMS Subject Classifications: 35J40, 35J67.

where K, h ∈ L(R), a(x) is a positive bounded function, and f(s) is asymptotically linear with respect to s at infinity, that is f(s)/s goes to a constant as s → +∞. Under suitable assumptions on K, a and f , we prove that the problem (P) has at least two positive solutions for |K|2 and |h|2 small by using Ekeland’s variational principle and Mountain pass theorem.
