This paper studies the expected return of a stock investment with a stop-loss strategy. The probability density function for the investment value is formulated as the solution for a boundary value problem of a partial differential equation. Then, the expected value is manipulated as a function of the stop-loss probability. Two examples are solved by an analytic method. Finally, we design a boun...

In this paper dynamic fracture process due to high-speed impact of steel plunger into ceramic sample is simulated. The developed numerical model is based on finite element method and a concept of incubation time criterion, which is proven to be applicable in order to predict brittle fracture under high-rate deformation. Simulations were performed for ZrO2(Y2O3) ceramic plates. To characterize f...

carbon nanotube (cnt) is considered as a new generation of material possessing superior mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. the applications of cnt, especially in composite materials, i.e. carbon nanotube reinforced polymer have received great attention and interest in recent years. to characterize the influence of cnt on the stress intensity factor of nanocomposites, three fracture ...

Formability of Tailor Welded Blank (TWB) is an important parameter which limits this kind of blanks usage. A forming criterion for tailor welded blank is presented based on the analytical model in this research. This criterion suggests Limit Strength Ratio (LSR) and Limit Thickness Ratio (LTR) for forming limit of TWB. When thickness ratio or strength ratio in tailor welded blank is greater tha...

This paper presents a Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) approach for investigating dynamic crack propagation in homogeneous and Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). The failure criterion is incorporated in the CZM using both a finite cohesive strength and work to fracture in the material description. A novel CZM for FGMs is explored and incorporated into a finite element framework. The material gradat...

This submission presents the results of a preliminary numerical study of an un-tensioned spiral-strand cable subjected to explosively formed fragment impact. An effective approach to generate finite element models of multi-layer spiral-strands with complex contact conditions has been devised. The modified Johnson-Cook model coupled with the Cockcroft-Latham fracture criterion was used to model ...

We propose a discontinuous finite element approximation for a model of quasi-static growth of brittle fractures in linearly elastic bodies formulated by Francfort and Marigo, and based on the classical Griffith’s criterion. We restrict our analysis to the case of anti-planar shear and we consider discontinuous displacements which are piecewise affine with respect to a regular triangulation.

This paper presents development of 3D non-linear finite element model to simulate the response and predict the behavior of un-bonded mild steel bars under axial and bending loading. The models were successfully analyzed with the finite element software ANSYS, taking into account the nonlinear material properties of the reinforced mild steel bars. A bending strain relationship is derived based o...

Numerical fracture toughness assessment of two types of steel, AISI 420 and AISI 431, has been conducted in this paper. The J-integral is chosen as a criterion for fracture behaviour comparison of compact type (CT) specimens made of investigated materials. The values of J-integral are determined through a newly developed algorithm using finite element (FE) stress analysis results of numerically...
