BACKGROUND Joint scar contractures are characterized by tight bands of soft tissue that bridge the 2 ends of the joint like a web. Classical treatment methods such as Z-plasties are mainly based on 2-dimensional designs. Our square flap method is an alternative surgical method that restores the span of the web in a stereometric fashion, thereby reconstructing joint function. METHODS In total,...

Introduction: Coverage of bone grafts is very important in reconstructive surgery. In edentulous alveolar ridges this coverage is particularly important for supporting dental prostheses. Here we present the case of a patient with a large deficient maxillary anterior region that was reconstructed with a bilateral palatal submucosal periosteal connective tissue flap: a soft tissue reserve for up...

The fingertip skin defect is a common hand injury often accompanied by tendon or bone exposure, and is normally treated with flaps. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional sensory recovery of random-pattern abdominal skin flap in the repair of fingertip cutaneous deficiency. A total of 23 patients, aged between 18 and 50 years (mean age, 31 years) with fingertip cutaneous deficienc...

INTRODUCTION The understanding of the skin's vascular anatomy has improved in the last decade. It has lead to technique modification such as the staged procedure in performing sural flaps and improvement in the flap survival rate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the acute vascular complications (flap necrosis or congestion) of 29 patients who underwent distal base sural flap for coverage ...

Journal of Refractive Surgery Volume 17 May/June 2001 ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To review the etiology, prevention, and management of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) complications. METHODS: Review of literature and the experience of the authors. RESULTS: Careful preoperative screening is critical to prevention of many potential complications of LASIK. Flap complications that occur during surgery a...

We herein report a case of immediate deep inferior epigastric perforator flap (DIEP flap) breast reconstruction surgery in a 50-year-old female patient with a lumbar peritoneal shunt tube. We performed DIEP flap reconstruction in the patient by withdrawing and subsequently reinserting the abdominal side of an implanted shunt tube.

UNLABELLED One of the main steps in perforator flap surgery is to identify the dominant perforator. Using multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) for the preoperative planning of deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEAP) flap surgery, we identified a perforator with a large caliber, an excellent location in the middle abdominal region, and a totally extramuscular trajectory in a s...

Local skin flaps have revolutionized reconstructive surgery. Mechanical loading is critical for flap survival: Excessive tissue tension reduces blood supply and induces tissue necrosis. However, skin flaps have never been analyzed mechanically. Here we explore the stress profiles of two common flap designs, direct advancement flaps and double back-cut flaps. Our simulations predict a direct cor...

Purpose: To introduce a novel technique using PANIS method (Plasma assisted noninvasive surgery) in pterygium removal surgery with conjunctival rotation flap. Methods: Two patients (1 male, 1 Female) grade 3 and 4 of pterygium, based on SLIT2 grading system, underwent local anesthesia, removing tissue from cornea also all related subtenon. Then surgeon used residual conjunctiva to cover bare sc...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS A pedicled nasoseptal flap is our preferred reconstructive technique after endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery. Its harvesting implies that the donor site (septal cartilage) is left bare. Secondary healing leads to crusting at the donor site that negatively affects the patient's quality of life and requires multiple outpatient debridements. A nasoseptal reverse rotatio...
