BACKGROUND Cisplatin (CP)-induced renal damage is associated with inflammation. Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is involved in models of inflammation. This study evaluates the effect of DL-propargylglycine (PAG), an inhibitor of endogenous H2S formation, on the renal damage induced by CP. METHODS The rats were injected with CP (5 mg/kg, i.p.) or PAG (5 mg/kg twice a day, i.p.) for 4 days, starting 1 ...

Introduction: Atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease. Following endothelial damage and platelet aggregation in that area and the recruitment of monocytes and their conversion to macrophages, LDL gradually accumulates under the endothelial artery wall and gradually oxidized and convert to oxi-LDL. By swallowing it, the macrophages turn into foam cell and then athe...

Spontaneous imbibition experiments were carried out on three core samples from the Mardie Greensand and one core sample of Barrow Group sandstone from the Australian North West Shelf. Water uptake into the samples, which were initially airsaturated, was measured by dynamic neutron radiography. The observed data were interpreted by (1) the linear diffusionequation approximation for fluid flow an...

We investigated vapor bubbles generated upon irradiation of gold nanoparticles with nanosecond laser pulses. Bubble formation was studied both with optical and acoustic means on supported single gold nanoparticles and single nanoparticles in suspension. Formation thresholds determined at different wavelengths indicate a bubble formation efficiency increasing with the irradiation wavelength. Vap...

The in-situ release of fine particles in a porous medium resulting from changes in the colloidal character of fines induced by changes in the electrolytic condition of the permeating fluid and its effects on processes related to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) are examined. Experimental results show that high pH and low salinity cause fines to be released which, in turn, causes a drastic decline in...

Various types of DNA damage, induced by endo- and exogenous genotoxic impacts, may become processed into structural chromosome changes such as sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) and chromosomal aberrations. Chromosomal aberrations occur preferentially within heterochromatic regions composed mainly of repetitive sequences. Most of the preclastogenic damage is correctly repaired by different repai...

Two patients with presumed hippocampal formation lesions and two patients with more extensive temporal lobe damage, all of whom became amnesic in a known year, were given tests of anterograde and retrograde memory function. The two patients with hippocampal formation lesions had moderately severe anterograde amnesia and limited retrograde amnesia for facts and events that affected, at most, the...

Nuclear bodies are discrete suborganelle structures that perform specialized functions in eukaryotic cells. In plant cells, light can induce de novo formation of nuclear bodies called photobodies (PBs) composed of the photosensory pigments, phytochrome (PHY) or cryptochrome (CRY). The mechanisms of formation, the exact compositions, and the functions of plant PBs are not known. Here, we have ex...

NF-κB proteins play a complex role in modulating carcinogenesis following DNA damage. Previous work identified p50/NF-κB1 as a necessary factor in the cytotoxic response to alkylation damage. Recently, these findings were extended to demonstrate that in the setting of alkylation damage, this NF-κB subunit acts as a haploinsufficient tumor suppressor that prevents hematologic malignancy formation.
