Malassezia pachydermatis is a relatively rare agent of bloodstream infections. We describe an unusual case of Malassezia fungemia in an adult patient hospitalized for Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia who was also found to have multibacillary leprosy. Treatment of the patient required extensive medical management but resulted in a good outcome.
We report on a case of fungemia due to fluconazole-resistant Candida nivariensis (MIC, > or =128 microg/ml). Internal transcribed spacer PCR followed by microchip gel electrophoresis with a blood culture that tested positive revealed a unique pattern different from those of other pathogenic yeasts.
We report a case of breakthrough invasive zygomycosis in a stem cell transplant recipient who was receiving caspofungin for treatment of a breakthrough Candida krusei fungemia that occurred during fluconazole prophylaxis. Also, patients receiving the echinocandin caspofungin remain at risk for pathogens, such as zygomycetes, that are intrinsically resistant to this agent.
We describe a case of cavitary pneumonia due to Candida dubliniensis along with fungemia due to Candida kefyr in a leukemic patient. This is the first case of C. dubliniensis isolated in our laboratory. The identification was performed by phenotypic and molecular methods such as thermotolerance test, carbohydrate fermentation and polymerase chain reaction.
A new clonal strain of Candida auris is an emerging etiologic agent of fungemia in Delhi, India. In 12 patients in 2 hospitals, it was resistant to fluconazole and genotypically distinct from isolates from South Korea and Japan, as revealed by M13 and amplified fragment length polymorphism typing.
We report an outbreak investigation of fungemia due to Penicillium species after prolonged flooding of a Thai hospital. Contaminated rubber diaphragms of blood culture bottles were identified, and the pseudo-outbreak was resolved after environmental cleaning, use of high-efficiency particulate air filtration, and strict compliance with basic infection control practices for blood culture procure...
We report a case of a 51-year old man with a severe aplastic anemia who developed an invasive trichosporonosis to Trichosporon faecale with fungemia and skin lesions during severe neutropenia. The treatment was successful before neutrophil recovery with a combination of voriconazole and liposomal amphotericin B.
