This study investigates the effects of five decontamination methods on the filter quality (qf) of three commercially available electret masks-N95, Gauze and Spunlace nonwoven masks. Newly developed evaluation methods, the overall filter quality (qf,o) and the qf ratio were applied to evaluate the effectiveness of decontamination methods for respirators. A scanning mobility particle sizer is uti...
Abstract Proteins are biocompatible, metabolizable, and susceptible to surface changes legend attachments for targeted distribution, therefore ideal materials nanoparticle-based drug delivery applications. The production, characterization, use of gelatin nanoparticles (GNPs) intracellular administration weakly cell-penetrating antibiotics (such as spectinomycin chloramphenicol) enhance their tr...
BACKGROUND Tracheostomy site infection can cause numerous problems. Absorbent foam dressing may be able to prevent proliferation of infectious microorganisms by absorbing the tracheostomy stoma exudate. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of absorbent foam with gauze dressing for prevention of tracheostomy site infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this double-blind randomized clinical tri...
OBJECTIVE To determine if a dry fibrin sealant dressing (DFSD) will provide superior hemostasis when compared with regular gauze in a ballistic injury animal model. DESIGN A nonsurvival randomized goat study. SETTING A federal biomedical research institute. SUBJECTS Eighteen anesthetized Angora goats. INTERVENTIONS Uncontrolled hemorrhage was induced by a complex ballistic extremity inj...
Cases of retained surgical guaze are rarely reported because of medico-legal and professional implications. Retained gauze for a period of more than 10 years is even rarer. A case of retained surgical gauze for 11 years, an accidental finding from a plain radiograph of a patient who had sustained proximal femoral fracture, is reported. A review of other reported cases is presented.
BACKGROUND Bleeding can be a problem in wound debridement. In search for an effective hemostatic agent, we experimented with a chitosan film combined with the recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rh-EGF), hypothesizing that it would achieve effective hemostasis and simultaneously enhance arterial healing. METHODS Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were used, and 96 puncture wounds were mad...
One of the chief objects of concern in intracranial surgery should be the avoidance of any unnecessary loss of blood, for at best, in many cases of brain tumor associated with venous stasis, bleeding is likely to be so excessive as to necessitate postponement of the final steps of the procedure until a second or even a third session. The common methods of blood stilling by sponge, clamp, and li...
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy [NPWT], or Vacuum-assisted closure therapy [VAC therapy], is a therapeutic method using a special sponge or gauze dressing with a vacuum device to promote wound healing. Aim of the study was to assess changes in indications for use of NPWT as well as evaluation of results of its use during the last ten years by comparing the literature published in the years 2002...
INTRODUCTION Retained sponges and instruments (RSI) due to surgery are a recognised medical 'never event' and have catastrophic implications for patients, healthcare professionals and medical care providers. The aim of this review was to elucidate the extent of the problem of RSI and to identify preventative strategies. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was performed on MEDLINE(®), Em...
