We report a case of breast cancer detected as an incidental finding on 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy. 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy is usually used to evaluate cardiac perfusion or to detect ectopic parathyroid adenomas; however, it is also known to sensitively detect breast cancer. Accordingly, a few reports have described the incidental detection of breast cancer by 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy performed to d...
Acute primary hyperparathyroidism and parathyroid crisis are characterized by life-threatening hypercalcemia, a rare disorder. A 69-year-old female patient presented at our hospital's neurology clinic with weakness, nausea, vomiting, depression, and hypercalcemia. Treatment of hypercalcemia resulted in no improvement in neurological symptoms, indicating resistance to treatment. Thyroid ultrason...
BACKGROUND Primary hyperparathyroidism is caused by the excessive growth of parathormone secretion, its consequence being hypercalcemia. The parathyroid adenoma is responsible for over half of primary hyperparathyroidism cases. The mandibular tumor can be the initial sign in the case of primary hyperparathyroidism. CASE PRESENTATION We present the case of a 33 year old patient with history of...
We present a case of an ectopic mediastinal parathyroid adenoma detected with 4-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) in a patient with persistent primary hyperparathyroidism and failed neck exploration. We discuss the utility of 4DCT in the localization of these lesions and offer an algorithm that implements the use of 4DCT early on when standard imaging techniques are nonlocalizing.
Localization of 99mTc- hexakis-2-methoxyisobutylisonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) by parathyroid adenomas is well known, and this warrants MIBI scan to evaluate suspected parathyroid adenoma in primary hyperparathyroidism. Typically, the radionuclide concentrates in both the thyroid gland and parathyroid adenoma in early images, and later on delayed images washes out slowly from the...
conclusions radiofrequency ablation may be used successfully in the treatment of parathyroid adenoma when a patient cannot tolerate surgery. case presentation a 47-year-old patient was referred to our hospital (namazi hospital, shiraz, iran) in april, 2015 with intracranial hemorrhage, as well as high serum calcium and pth (parathyroid hormone) levels (12.1 mg/dl and 1062 pg/ml, respectively), ...
the coexistence of medullary thyroid carcinoma (mtc), papillary thyroid carcinoma (ptc) and parathyroid adenoma is an uncommon clinical entity. here, we report a case of mtc, ptc, and parathyroid adenoma diagnosed incidentally on a routine physical examination of the neck for the work-up of diabetes. the patient had neither symptoms of hypercalcemia nor those related to mtc and ptc.
The 85% of cases of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) are due to parathyroid adenomas (PA) and less than 1% to parathyroid carcinomas (PC). The PA usually measure <2 cm, weigh <1 g and generate a mild PHPT, whereas the PC usually exceeds these dimensions and are associated with a severe PHPT. However, giant PA (GPA), which is defined as those larger than 3 g, has been documented. Those may be ...
Objective. The brown tumour of hyperparathyroidism is a result of a metabolic disorder caused by primary hyperparathyroidism. Report. We described a case of a 37-year-old female patient presenting bimaxillary intraoral lesions and swelling in the neck. Incisional biopsy of the oral lesion was performed and histopathological examination revealed a central giant cell lesion composed by intense ha...
