We tested the hypothesis that kinetic differences among allelic variants of glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI; D-glucose-6-phosphate ketol-isomerase, EC 5.3.1.9) from the sea anemone Metridium senile differentially modulate glucose metabolism at the glycolysis-pentose-shunt branch point. Fractional contribution of pentose shunt and absolute flux of glucose in glycolysis were measured in fasted...

Kinetoplastid protozoa compartmentalize the first seven enzymes of glycolysis and two enzymes of glycerol metabolism in a microbody, the glycosome. While in its mammalian host, Trypanosoma brucei depends entirely on glucose for ATP generation. Under aerobic conditions, most of the glucose is metabolized to pyruvate. Aerobic metabolism depends on the activities of glycosomal triosephosphate isom...

Biochemical investigations have revealed various metabolic disturbances in guinea-pig lungs, associated with experimental bagassosis (Singh, Mitra, Venkitasubramanian & Viswanathan, 1960; Singh, Venkitasubramanian & Viswanathan, 1961). Singh, Venkitasubramanian & Viswanathan (1962) noted changes in the cellular constituents of guinea-pig lungs in experimental bagassosis: these included a remark...

Figure 1. Scheme of a kinetic model of central intracellular metabolism. Red arrows indicate glycolysis, magenta pentose-phosphate pathway, green gluconeogenesis, and blue tricaboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Black arrows indicate exchanges with metabolites, external with respect to the model variables: glc (glucose), g6p (glucose 6-phosphate), f6p (fructose 6phosphate), fbp (fructose phosphate), g3p...

Ketol-isomerases catalyze the reversible isomerization between aldoses and ketoses. D-Xylose isomerase carries out the first reaction in the catabolism of D-xylose, but is also able to convert D-glucose to D-fructose. The first step of the reaction is an enzyme-catalyzed ring opening of the cyclic substrate. The active-site amino-acid acid/base pair involved in ring opening has long been invest...

There is an increasing demand for high fructose corn syrup as alternative to glucose especially use by people with diabetes due its low glycemic index. The cost of this product coupled has attracted the attention many researchers search and sustainable production route. Therefore, focus work was isolating screening Aspergillus niger Bacillus coagulans possible producers amylase isomerase respec...

Hybrids between Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and R. zambeziensis were reared and glucose-phosphate-isomerase isoenzymes were resolved by agarose electrophoresis. By phenotyping hybrids in F1 and F2 generations autosomal transmission of 2 GPI genes was demonstrated. Identification of a hybrid phenotype provides a method for identifying hybrids in field collections.

high fructose corn syrup (hfcs) is commonly found in soft drinks and juice beverages, as well as in many pre-packaged foods such as breakfast cereals, baked goods and dairy desserts. historically, sucrose (table sugar) was primarily added to processed foods and beverages as the sweetening agent. in recent years, the use of hfcs has significantly increased in popularity due to its sweetness, abi...
