Six genera and 27 species of hard ticks (Ixodidae) currently are recognized in the United States east of the Mississippi River as follows: Amblyomma (4 species), Boophilus (1), Dermacentor (3), Haemaphysalis (2), Ixodes (16), and Rhipicephalus (1). We present a diagrammatic couplet key to the adults of the six genera and 27 species of Ixodidae found in the eastern portion of the United States.
Ticks are amongst the important ectoparasites where livestock concerned, as they adversely affect animals through bloodsucking. In tropical and subtropical countries, transmit pathogens such babesiosis, theileriosis, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis in cattle, causing a reduction production rate significant concomitant economic losses. 80% of cattle population across world, with an estimated loss USD...
BACKGROUND The majority of vector-borne infections occur in the tropics, including Africa, but molecular eco-epidemiological studies are seldom reported from these regions. In particular, most previously published data on ticks in Ethiopia focus on species distribution, and only a few molecular studies on the occurrence of tick-borne pathogens or on ecological factors influencing these. The pre...
BACKGROUND A survey on tick species composition was carried out in Golestan Province Iran during year 2010-2011.The aim was to determine tick species parasitizing domestic ruminants and their seasonal population dynamics. METHODS A total of 124 sheep, 92 goats, 84 cattle, 74 camels and 12 horses in several villages were inspected for tick infestation. The collected ticks preserved in 70% alco...
Abstract Background Previously, twelve Rickettsia species were identified in ticks, fleas, sheep keds ( Melophagus ovinus ), bats Pipistrellus pipistrellus ) and a tick-bitten patient the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) northwestern China. Here we aimed to molecularly detect rickettsial agents red fox Vulpes vulpes marbled polecat Vormela peregusna their ticks. Methods During 2018–2019,...
In the present study further characterization of the amplified sequence of the citrate synthase gene of the spotted fever group Rickettsia isolated from Ixodes ricinus ticks in Sweden showed that it has 100% homology with the deposited sequence of the citrate synthase gene of Rickettsia helvetica. The restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) pattern of an amplified 382-bp product of the ...
Nymphs and adults of hard-bodied ticks were collected in Connecticut and tested by direct and indirect immunofluorescence staining methods for rickettsiae and Borrelia burgdorferi. Of the 609 Ixodes dammini ticks examined, 59 (9.7%) harbored rickettsialike microorganisms in hemocytes (blood cells). These bacteria reacted with fluorescein-conjugated antiserum to Ehrlichia canis, the etiologic ag...
When attempting to feed on their hosts, ticks face the problem of host hemostasis (the vertebrate mechanisms that prevent blood loss), inflammation (that can produce itching or pain and thus initiate defensive behavior on their hosts) and adaptive immunity (by way of both cellular and humoral responses). Against these barriers, ticks evolved a complex and sophisticated pharmacological armamenta...
