Herpesviruses are a large group of successful, and widely distributed, double-stranded DNA viruses of serious medical and veterinary importance. Although they infect many different animal species, they are host specific at the individual species level. On the other hand, they share a common life style, first with an acute infection in epithelial cells which is followed by the establishment of p...

We resequenced the genome of equid herpesvirus 2 (EHV2) strain 86/67 and sequenced the genomes of EHV2 strain G9/92 and equid herpesvirus 5 (EHV5) strain 2-141/67. The most prominent genetic differences are the dissimilar locations of the interleukin-10 (IL-10)-like genes and the presence of an OX-2-like gene in EHV5 only.

A new DNA polymerase and DNase activity were identified from cells infected with human B-lymphotropic herpesvirus (HBLV). DNA polymerase associated with HBLV infection was similar in its sensitivity to inhibition by ppi analogs as other herpesvirus-specific DNA polymerases but was dissimilar in its inhibition by certain nucleoside triphosphates.

Herpesvirus anguillae (HVA), also known as anguillid herpesvirus 1 (AngHV1), is one of the relevant viruses in wild and cultured anguillid eels. Here, the complete genome sequence of strain HVA980811, isolated in Chiayi, Taiwan, is reported. The genotype of the eel herpesviruses in Taiwan is supposed to be identical to the Japanese AngHV1.

Florenal, a new antiviral preparation, has shown inhibitory action on the cytopathic effect of herpesvirus in tissue culture. Florenal had a marked therapeutic effect in mice challenged intracerebrally with the herpesvirus. Clinical evaluation of herpetic keratitis, adenovirus conjunctivitis, and epidemic keratoconjunctivitis patients treated with Florenal ophthalmic ointment revealed a good th...

We obtained 475 nucleotides of the DNA polymerase gene of a novel human herpesvirus 8 homolog sequence in a gibbon. The finding of this new gibbon virus, which clusters with a related chimpanzee virus in the rhadinovirus 2 genogroup, suggests the existence of a novel gamma-2-herpesvirus in humans.

A feline virus isolate previously reported as adenovirus-like has more recently been identified and characterized as a new feline herpesvirus. This herpesvirus, which appears to be cell associated, has some characteristics of the cytomegaloviruses and has been found to induce chemical crystal formations in infected cell cultures.

INTRODUCTION Herpesvirus infections are prevalent worldwide, but most run their course asymptomatically. Clinical presentations in symptomatic cases vary widely and include febrile and mononucleosis-like syndromes. In immunocompromised patients, herpetic infection can be lethal and routine laboratory tests are of little use. Use of novel techniques may provide important improvements in diagnosi...

Viruses of the family Herpesviridae are responsible for a diverse set of human diseases. The available treatments are largely ineffective, with the exception of a few drugs for treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. For several members of this DNA virus family, advances have been made recently in the biochemistry and structural biology of the essential viral protease, revealing com...
