INTRODUCTION A Giant Hiatal Paraesophageal Hernia (GPEH) is a Hiatal Hernia (HH) that includes more than 30% of the stomach in the thorax. The gold standard form of repair today is the laparoscopic abdominal approach in elective scenarios. Laparoscopic HH repair advantages include, less postoperative pain, small incisions, reduced postoperative respiratory complications are reduced, shorter hos...
Background/Aims Esophageal motor disorder (EMD) has been shown to be associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, the association of EMD with a Barrett's esophagus (BE) is controversial. Our objective was to evaluate whether the presence of EMD was an independent factor associated with BE. Methods A retrospective case-control study was conducted in GERD patients who all ha...
HYPOTHESIS It is unclear if age should be considered a factor in the choice of treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and if fundoplication in elderly patients is as safe and effective as it is in younger patients. We hypothesized that the outcome of laparoscopic antireflux operations in patients younger than 65 years is similar to that of patients 65 years and older. DESIGN Ret...
OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to determine whether genital hiatus (gh) and perineal body (pb), measured using the pelvic organ prolapse quantification system of the International Continence Society, are predictive of an abnormally distensible levator hiatus on ultrasound and of objective prolapse and/or prolapse symptoms. STUDY DESIGN The design of the study included datasets of 18...
Laparoscopic approach has been suggested as the definitive treatment for large hiatal hernias. Reinforcement of the hiatoplasty and the need to perform antireflux surgery is still undergoing discussion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the postoperative results, with special emphasis on the recurrence rate and reflux after surgery comparing the use or not of mesh reinforcement. This pr...
500 cases of Esophago-Gastroscopy were evaluated at the Shahid Moddares teaching and research medical center. Endoscopic diagnosis were: 38% Gastritis, 24% Duodenal Ulcer, 8% Esophageal Carcinoma, 6% Gastric Carcinoma, 6% Gastric Ulcer, 6% Hiatal Hernia, 3% Esophageal Varises. In 68% of these cases Gastroscopy findings were in Agreement with Radiology reports.
BACKGROUND Plication of an esophageal hiatus during surgery for esophageal hiatal hernia is a common practice; however, a mesh may be used if the hiatus is markedly enlarged. Recently, various late complications occurring as a result of mesh-induced esophageal and/or gastric wall injuries have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION A 71-year-old woman presented at a neighborhood clinic in November ...
INTRODUCTION According to the Brazilian National Institute of Cancer, gastric cancer is the third leading cause of death among men and the fifth among women in Brazil. Surgical resection is the only potentially curative treatment. The most serious complications associated with surgery are fistulas and dehiscence of the jejunal-esophageal anastomosis. Hiatal hernia refers to herniation of elemen...
