The frame and field rates that have been used for television since the 1930s cause problems for motion portrayal, which are increasingly evident on the large, high-resolution television displays that are now common. In this paper we report on a programme of experimental work that successfully demonstrated the advantages of higher frame rate capture and display as a means of improving the qualit...

A WiMAX technology is a very promising Broadband Wireless Access technology that is able to transmit different service types. This latter can have different constraints such as traffic rate, maximum latency, and tolerated jitter. The IEEE 802.16 Medium Access Control specifies five types of QoS classes: UGS, rtPS, ertPS, nrtPS, and BE. However, the IEEE 802.16 standard does not specify the sche...

In this paper, we present a standard definition for learning objects, a controversy around it, and the resulted working definition, along with features to be held by learning objects, benefits of the object-oriented approach for learning, some pros and cons for using learning objects, and finally some quality standard guidelines for these objects. In addition, we introduce shortly a taxonomy of...

The idea that a logically possible world is identical with or can be described as a maximally consistent proposition set is a fundamental assumption of the conventional model set theoretical semantics for modal logic. Although the concept is formally unproblematic, philosophically there are serious difficulties in the standard definition of a logically possible world. I want to raise philosophi...

We show that some natural output conventions for error-free computation in chemical reaction networks (CRN) lead to a common level of computational expressivity. Our main results are that the standard definition of error-free CRNs have equivalent computational power to 1) asymmetric and 2) democratic CRNs. The former have only “yes” voters, with the interpretation that the CRN’s output is yes i...

Electronic collaboration (e-collaboration) is operationally defined here as collaboration using electronic technologies among different individuals to accomplish a common task (Kock & D’Arcy, 2002, 2001). This is a broad definition that encompasses not only computer-mediated collaborative work, but also collaborative work supported by other types of technologies that do not fit most people’s de...

This Report describes the work on predictive audio coding carried out by the BBC as part of the RACE 'HIVITS' project. The purpose of the work was to develop and demonstrate a low bit-rate audio codec with low delay for use with a digital HDTV (high definition television) signal coded by the HIVITS HDTV codec and capable of conveying at least 5 channels of audio within the HDTV bitstream.
