The NASA GTE TRACE A mission sampled air over the South Atlantic and western Indian Oceans. Thirteen flight legs were flown within the marine boundary layer (MBL). The MBL was typically the cleanest air sampled (e.g., CH 4 < 1680 ppb, CO < 70 ppb, C2H 6 < 400 ppt, C3H 8 < 40 ppt, NOx < 15 ppt, and midday NO < 5 ppt) but was overlain by polluted air. The photochemistry of the MBL was influenced ...

Models are presented for the past history of nitrogen on Mars based on Viking measurements showing that the atmosphere is enriched in (15)N. The enrichment is attributed to selective escape, with fast atoms formed in the exosphere by electron impact dissociation of N(2) and by dissociative recombination of N(2)(+). The initial partial pressure of N(2) should have been at least as large as sever...

Staphylococcus aureus is a commensal human pathogen and a major cause of nosocomial infections. As gaseous signaling molecules, endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO·) protect S. aureus from antibiotic stress synergistically, which we propose involves the intermediacy of nitroxyl (HNO). Here, we examine the effect of exogenous sulfide and HNO on the transcriptome and the format...

With the help of nanocrystalline TiO2, the direct electrochemistry of xanthine oxidase (XOD) was achieved and two pairs of redox waves were observed. The interaction between XOD and nitric oxide (NO) was also investigated. The experimental results reveal that NO can be reduced at a XOD-nano TiO2 film modified electrode. When the NO concentration was low, the reduced product, HNO, would inactiva...

The influence of surface modification of activated carbon on the adsorption of methyl mercaptan in N(2) was investigated. The modification of the activated carbon was carried out by treatment with HNO(3)/H(2)SO(4) solutions, heat-treatment in Ar, and adsorption of cetylamine. Acid-treatment increased the adsorption of methyl mercaptan compared with the original activated carbon, and the adsorbe...
