Virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are major effectors in acquired immune responses against viral infection. Virus-specific CTLs recognize specific viral peptides presented by major histocompatibility complex class-I (MHC-I) on the surface of virus-infected target cells via their T cell receptor (TCR) and eliminate target cells by both direct and indirect mechanisms. In human immunod...
BACKGROUND AND AIM Prisons in Egypt do not currently screen for blood-borne viruses, and there are no statistics concerning the prevalence of hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus or human immunodeficiency virus among prisoners. This study was performed to detect the prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis C, hepatitis B core and human immunodeficiency virus among Egyptian prisoners. METHOD...
A virus identifyied by Montagnier (Barre-Sinoussi et al., 1983) and Gallo et al. (1984), present in opportunistic infections caused by Pneumocystis carinii associated to malignant neoplasies as the Kaposi’s sarcoma (Gottlieb et al., 1981; Masur et al., 1981; Siegal et al., 1981), later called the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), is the responsible for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, ...
BACKGROUND Sexually transmitted diseases such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which causes or induces incurable fatal infections have been transmitted through Assisted Reproduction Technology and from infected mothers to the fetus or new born. AIM The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of this chronic viral agent among infertile women recruited for Assisted Reproduction Te...
Background Lopinavir, saquinavir, and ritonavir are viral protease inhibitors (PIs) developed for widely used in the therapy of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related disease. These compounds also active vitro against pathogens causing tuberculosis, malaria coronavirus infections. PIs have been regarded as a platform design targeting severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-encoded ...
We reported two cases of patients with coinfection by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 and human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) type I who developed opportunistic infections despite of relatively high CD4+ cells count. These cases showed clinical evidence to consider an earlier antiretroviral treatment for coinfected patientes regardless CD4+ cells counts.
The following state-of-the-art seminar was delivered as part of the Aspen Lung Conference on Pulmonary Hypertension and Vascular Diseases held in Aspen, Colorado in June 2012. This paper will summarize the lecture and present results from a nonhuman primate model of infection with Simian (Human) Immunodeficiency Virus - nef chimeric virions as well as the idea that polymorphisms in the HIV-1 ne...
