Even after many years of research and industrial practice, the production of penicillin G in fed-batch fermentation by Penicillium crysogenum continues to attract research interest. There are many reasons: the commercial and therapeutic importance of penicillin and its derivatives, the complexity of cell growth, and the impact of engineering variables, the last of which are significant in large...

Today, systems of equations with more than one million unknowns need to be solved. To solve such systems in a reasonable time requires the use of powerful parallel computers. The European project PARASOL aimed to design and develop a library of scalable sparse matrix solvers for distributed memory computers. Parallab was a partner in the project and developed the domain decomposition solver DD....

For purification of peptides, it is often difficult to use methods similar to those applied in the purification of other organic compounds, mainly due to their complexity. Purification of organic molecules often uses methods based on crystallization to isolate the desired molecule. As efficiency and high yields are of vital importance for optimal economy of any industrial manufacturing process,...

In this work, we propose a locally connected deep learning framework for recommender systems, which reduces the complexity of deep neural network (DNN) by two to three orders of magnitude. We further extend the framework using the idea of recently proposed Wide&Deep model. Experiments on industrial-scale datasets show that our methods could achieve good results with much shorter runtime.

In many branches of industry, computer simulation has become an indispensable design tool that replaces a great deal of experiments in product design and thus reduces costs and time to market. However, simulation requires large amounts of computational resources. Parallel and distributed computing is a way to provide the required compute power especially to small and medium size companies or re...

The empirical relationship between economic diversity and economic stability varies when it is measured at different geographical scales. This paper evaluates the role of geographical scales in assessing this diversity-stability relationship among counties, states, Economic Areas (EAs), metropolitan counties and metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) in the contiguous U.S. When choosing geograph...

Software-Defined Internet Exchange Points (SDXes) promise to significantly increase the flexibility and function of interdomain traffic delivery on the Internet. Unfortunately, current SDX designs cannot yet achieve the scale required for large Internet exchange points (IXPs), which can host hundreds of participants exchanging traffic for hundreds of thousands of prefixes. Existing platforms ar...
