Innominate and common carotid artery lesions have usually been treated surgically with extra-anatomic bypass via a cervical approach or median sternotomy. The transtoracic approach succeeded in providing direct access to proximal aortic arch branch vessel lesions, but these approach was associated with rather high mortality rate (22%) [1-4]. In 1967, Diethrich et al. [5] reported the first extr...

We review innominate artery compression of the trachea in 60 surgically corrected patients and 30 in patients who did not undergo surgery. The symptoms and radiologic features are correlated with the degree of tracheal narrowing at bronchoscopy and with associated defects that may exist. From this study, a history of respiratory distress with "reflex apnea" associated with tracheal narrowing is...

We present two cases of innominate artery (IA) in a cervical position. In the first case, surgery was not performed because there was no indication. In the second, it was possible to obtain surgical images of the AI and its branches located in front of the laryngotracheal axis. A warning about the serious risk involved in cervical surgery in these cases is indicated.

A case of transection of the origin of the innominate artery with an associated head injury following blunt thoracic injury is presented. The patient had been the unrestrained driver in a road traffic accident. Investigation demonstrated embolic damage to the brain parenchyma. Early surgical repair employing cardiopulmonary bypass and hypothermic circulatory arrest was successfully performed wi...

F istula formation between the trachea and the innominate artery is a rare complication of tracheostomy (1). The survival rate in patients who develop bleeding from a tracheo-innominate artery fistula (TIF) has been reported as 14.3%, and only patients who received immediate surgical treatment survived (2). Of those patients who develop a TIF, 78% do so within the first 3 wk after tracheostomy ...

Le Compte (1951) points out that the actual anatomical location of the aortic body is not wel defined in man. Four localities have been described by Boyd (1937): 1. Between the ductus arteriosus and the descending arch of the aorta; 2. On the right side and upper surface of the pu!monary artery; 3. Lateral to the innominate artery root; 4. To the left side of the antero-lateral aspect of the ao...

INTRODUCTION Simplified Aortic Cannulation (SAC), wherein the innominate artery is used as the arterial inflow site rather than the ascending aorta, has proved to be a useful technique for arterial cannulation especially for small neonates undergoing complex cardiac operations. Since few technical options are available for re-entry cardiac injuries in small infants, we postulate that this techn...
