The effect of treating cultured mouse fibroblasts (L929 cells) with cloned mouse interferon-gamma on the growth of Rickettsia prowazekii within the fibroblasts was studied. Within 48 h after infection, rickettsiae were cleared from a substantial proportion of the initially infected cells and rickettsial growth was inhibited in those cells that remained infected, when L929 cells were treated wit...

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a potent deactivator of myeloid cells that limits the intensity and duration of immune and inflammatory responses. The activity of IL-10 can be suppressed during inflammation, infection, or after allogeneic tissue transplantation. We investigated whether inflammatory factors suppress IL-10 activity at the level of signal transduction. Out of many factors tested, only l...

The observed afterglows of gamma ray bursts (GRBs), in particular that of GRB 970228 six months later, seem to rule out relativistic fireballs and relativistic firecones driven by merger or accretion induced collapse of compact stellar objects in galaxies as the origin of GRBs. GRBs can be produced by superluminal jets from such events.

Mycobacterium avium causes infections in immunocompromised individuals. Recurrent infection with this organism has been associated with a deletion at the 818 residue of the interferon-gamma receptor (IFN-gammaR). This mutation produces a truncated receptor without an intracytoplasmic tail, resulting in diminished signaling. We describe a substitution at the 832 residue of the IFN-gammaR causing...

Data concerning the presence of T-cell-derived cytokines in the rheumatic joint are conflicting, challenging the hypothesis that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a T-cell-mediated disease. In this study synovial tissue specimens of 11 patients with RA and eight patients with osteoarthritis (OA) were stained for interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and its receptor. The level of expression of IFN-gamma was ...

Although interferon-gamma, interleukin-10, and adiponectin are key immunopathogenesis mediators of tuberculosis, their association with clinical manifestations of early stage disease is inconclusive. We determined interferon-gamma, interleukin-10, and adiponectin levels in clinically and phenotypically well-characterised non-substance using new pulmonary tuberculosis patients (n = 13) and contr...

Evidence from in vitro studies suggests that gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and nitric oxide (NO) are important in host defense against the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. We used SCID mice with targeted disruption of the IFN-gamma receptor gene and mice with targeted disruption of the gene encoding inducible NO synthase to show that IFN-gamma plays a role in the innate immunity to ameb...

As the most energetic explosion in the universe, the gamma-ray burst (GRB) presents many unanswered questions. Comprised of photons with energies of around 100keV, the GRB is difficult to detect and can only be observed using space telescopes. In a 1990s survey with the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO), data on over 2700 gamma-ray bur...
