Thirty preterm infants (birthweight under 1500 g) were treated with phenobarbitone to examine its effectiveness in reducing the incidence of intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH), the control group comprising 28 infants. The treated group had 57% incidence of IVH and mortality of 13% compared with 68% and 14%, respectively, in controls.
AIM To examine the relation between grade III-IV periventricular/intraventricular haemorrhage (PVH/IVH) and antenatal exposure to tocolytic treatment in very low birthweight (VLBW) premature infants. STUDY DESIGN The study population consisted of 2794 infants from the Israel National VLBW Infant Database, of gestational age 24-32 weeks, who had a cranial ultrasound examination during the firs...
Aim—To examine the relation between grade III–IV periventricular/ intraventricular haemorrhage (PVH/IVH) and antenatal exposure to tocolytic treatment in very low birthweight (VLBW) premature infants. AIMS To assess optic disc characteristics in premature infants with and without ischaemic brain injury and to evaluate the role of optic disc morphology in dating the injury. METHODS RetCam fundal images, cranial ultrasounds and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 109 premature infants were analysed. The study cohort was divided into subgroups depending on the presence or absence of periventr...
OBJECTIVE Inability of continuous wave (CW) optical spectroscopy to measure changes in scattering, and the use of an arbitrary rather than an actual baseline, makes the CW method highly susceptible to errors that can lead to a false-positive or false-negative diagnosis. Our objective was to assess whether, and to what extent, the use of quantitative frequency domain spectroscopy would improve o...
Background and Purpose—Thick cisternal clot on CT is a well-recognized risk factor for delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Whether intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) or intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) predisposes to DCI is unclear. The Fisher CT grading scale identifies thick SAH but does not separately account for IVH or ICH. Methods—We studied 276 consecutively ...
Background and Purpose—The aim of the current study was to investigate the dose-dependent efficacy of intraventricular fibrinolysis (IVF) in patients with severe intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). Methods—Patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, severe IVH, and obstructive hydrocephalus with the need for external ventricular drainage were treated with IVF through external ventricular drainage. T...
Background Interventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and Broncho pulmonary dysplasia(BPD) commonly occur in premature infants and they associate with platelet dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of MPV and occurrence of IVH and BPD. Materials and methods In this cross sectional study, 3 groups including IVH, BPD and control were compared. All participants were...
The authors present two cases of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) believed to be a result of epidural blood patching. The first was a 71-year-old woman who had new onset of nontraumatic IVH on computed tomography (CT) scan after undergoing an epidural blood patch (EBP). This amount of intraventricular blood was deemed an incidental finding since it was of very small volume to account for her o...
BACKGROUND Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) occurs in 60-70% of neonates weighing 500-750 g and 10-20% of those weighing 1,000-1,500 g. All forms of IVH have been associated with neurocognitive deficits. Both subarachnoid and IVHs have been associated with delayed vasospasm leading to neurological deficits. Pathways linking hemoglobin release from blood clots to vasospasm include heme-induced ...
