A model of the hyoid-larynx complex is designed to be incorporated into a physiological articulatory model. The previously reported articulatory model consists of the tongue, mandible, hyoid bone, and vocal tract wall. The aim of this work is to include the laryngeal structures to simulate the tongue-larynx interaction which is observed in natural speech. The framework of laryngeal structures i...

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is a rare, benign, mesenchymal neoplasm that usually arises in the pleura, but rarely involves other sites outside the serosal space (mediastinum, lung, liver, thyroid gland); larynx involvement is very rare with only sporadic cases reported in the literature. We report a case of SFT in a 41-year-old woman with supraglottic laryngeal invovlement; symptoms included ...

Background Lymphoepithelial carcinoma is a tumor mostly diagnosed in the nasopharynx, but it has also been described in a variety of nonnasopharyngeal sites. It is extremely rare in the larynx and should be distinguished from squamous cell carcinoma. Therefore, it must be known by clinicians, pathologists and oncologists. In this case report, we discuss its etiopathogeny, its epidemiological, c...

Alcohol intake is positively associated with the risk of upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) cancers; but its effect on gastric or colorectal cancer is controversial. Previous study had identified several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of Alcohol Dehydrogenase (ADH) genes associated with UADT cancers in European and Japanese populations. We sought to determine if these SNPs associated with...

Vocal cord paralysis associated with goiter usually indicates the presence of a malignancy. Pediatric patients retain significant thymic tissue that regresses only later in life. This thymic tissue can develop significant hyperplasia during an acute autoimmune process. We describe a case of a 17-year-old girl who presented with a goiter secondary to severe Graves' disease and a 2-month history ...

OBJECTIVES To describe an atypical case of laryngeal chondrosarcoma of arytenoid cartilage presenting as bilateral vocal fold immobility and to avoid potential missed diagnosis. METHODS Our case study included a detail history, physical and radiological examination, laryngeal electromyography (LEMG), and surgical treatment and pathology analysis. We compared it with the previously discussed c...

Introduction:  Carcinoma of the larynx is an extremely uncommon clinical entity in pediatric age. The diagnosis of the laryngeal carcinoma is often delayed due to the low index of suspicion. The factors contributing to delayed diagnosis include the similarity of its symptoms to common benign lesions of the larynx in childhood and difficult examination of the larynx in pediatric patients. ...

We report the CT findings in a patient with a lateral neck mass histologically diagnosed as a laryngeal schwannoma but presenting some uncommon CT features. CT showed unusual calcified components, very rarely observed and potentially misleading for diagnosis. However, this imaging feature can be found in ancient schwannomas. Our case is, therefore, a very rare one and reviews the main different...

Sarcoidosis is a multi-system disease which rarely involves the upper respiratory tract, leading to hoarseness, dysphagia, laryngeal paralysis, and upper airway obstruction. The Waldeyer's ring involvement in sarcoidosis is also very rare. In this article, we report a 32-year-old male case in whom a nasopharyngeal mass was detected based on the Waldeyer's ring involvement due to sarcoidosis.

Multiple symmetric lipomatosis is an alteration in the neck, upper trunk and upper extremities fat deposits. It produces an aesthetic problem and sometimes upper airway obstruction when the larynx is infiltrated by the mass. We report the case of a male with Madelung's disease, which began with acute dyspnea caused by laryngeal fat deposits and obstructive lipoma.
