Location-based services and applications are especially useful in mobile computing environments. However, mobile computing environments are intrinsically heterogeneous, since different network technologies could be used and integrated, like GPRS and 802.11. The challenge for researches and industry is to build a common infra-structure that enable the development of mobile applications despite s...
In the last few years we are witnessing a rapid growth in the mobile use of the internet and services like telephony. Mobility offers a great deal of advantages to end users but has also restrictions due to heterogeneity of networks, protocols and mobile devices with limited capabilities. In that we can add the need for manual interaction with service providers which costs in time and flexibili...
Due to the increasing usage of small and low footprinted devices like mobile phones as clients of mobile information systems a new problem arises: “How to determine the relevance of updates for a large number of mobile clients?” In this paper we present an indexing scheme that represents conjunctive queries posed by the mobile clients in a trie. So, IDs of the clients are referenced by their qu...
The paper aims to describe in some details a system called Mobile Eldit (m-Eldit) that is under development at the University of Trento, Italy. It is a mobile version that can be accessed from mobile devices like PDAs, of an existing language learning platform, developed at the European Academy of Bolzano, Italy. The paper also gives description of the theoretical bases behind the system – a ge...
Cloud computing is Modern day's wonder. It is not a product but a service, which provides shared resources, software, and information to computers and other devices like smartphones as a utility over a network mainly internet[1]. Resources namely memory, storage space, processor, etc are not available at user's end explicitly. Service providers own these resources and user access them...
The performance of an eDonkey-based mobile P2P file-sharing system is investigated by means of time-dynamic simulations. We show in detail that the sizes of the swapping entities, i.e. chunks and blocks, influence the time required for downloading a file. The performance depends on mobile P2P specific factors, like the access technology or the size of typical contents of mobile users.
We introduce Moversight, an early stage group communication protocol, specifically designed for collaborative Peerto-Peer (P2P) applications in mobile environments. The protocol especially deals with problems encountered in mobile scenarios. It provides basic properties like virtual synchrony of cooperating entities, support for stationary and mobile participants, selforganization and scalabili...
Mobile devices such as notebooks and PDAs are very interesting tools for web-based teaching and distant teaching today. We have adapted Web-based remote laboratory environments to mobile devices like PDAs and smartphones to remotely control a Pioneer 3 AT mobile robot.
Today the most important services which have been supported by mobile networks are phoning, video or data transfer. However, the recent development of new mobile technologies like Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) or HighSpeed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), which provide users with broadband mobile services, has enabled the access to permanent online services on mobile devices....
In mobile telephony, there are several vulnerabilities like interception, fabrication, and denial of services. Security aspects have been improved in every new generation of mobile system. This seminar paper explains security in each generation and discusses how security is ensured in mobile telephony. This paper was written for the Security Computer Systems course held by Björn Victor at the U...
