The gating pathways of mechanosensitive channels of large conductance (MscL) in two bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Escherichia coli) are studied using the finite element method. The phenomenological model treats transmembrane helices as elastic rods and the lipid membrane as an elastic sheet of finite thickness; the model is inspired by the crystal structure of MscL. The interactions ...

One of the locations of renal artery atherosclerosis is at the orifice of the renal artery, therefore thestructure of this orifice was assessed in 6 normal, adult male dogs by light microscopy (LM) andtransmission electron microscopy (TEM). For the LM study, processed tissues were embedded in paraffinand sectioned serially into 6-μm thickness. Sections were stained with orcein. For the TEM stud...

We considered the issue of whether shifts in the metarhodopsin I (MI)-metarhodopsin II (MII) equilibrium from lipid composition are fully explicable by differences in bilayer curvature elastic stress. A series of six lipids with known spontaneous radii of monolayer curvature and bending elastic moduli were added at increasing concentrations to the matrix lipid 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-...

Recent studies indicate that the cell membrane, interacting with its attached cytoskeleton, is an important regulator of cell function, exerting and responding to forces. We investigate this relationship by looking for connections between cell membrane elastic properties, especially surface tension and bending modulus, and cell function. Those properties are measured by pulling tethers from the...

In recent years pavement maintenance planning has become a main task among highway agencies. In order to determine the structural capacity of a flexible pavement, non-destructive testing equipment is used. Many countries use the falling weight deflectometer (FWD). It is possible to obtain deflection data and backcalculate the pavements’ mechanical properties. However, the method used affects th...

In this work a new approach to multidimensional geometry and multidimensional physics based on smooth infinitesimal analysis (SIA) is proposed. Reality may be considered as the process of time evolution of holistic energetically very weak macro objects elastic membranes with the geometry based on smooth infinitesimal analysis. An embedded membrane in this multidimensional world will look differ...

By using the grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations on spherical surfaces with two fixed vertices separated by the distance L, we find that the second-order phase transition changes to the first-order one when L is sufficiently large. We find that string tension σ 6= 0 in the smooth phase while σ → 0 in the wrinkled phase.

We present a rigorous procedure to derive coarse-grained red blood cell (RBC) models, which lead to accurate mechanical properties of realistic RBCs. Based on a semi-analytic theory linear and nonlinear elastic properties of the RBC membrane can be matched with those obtained in optical tweezers stretching experiments. In addition, we develop a nearly stress-free model which avoids a number of ...

The elasticity and viscosity of the human erythrocyte membrane were measured as a function of the concentration of wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) in a suspending solution containing 1 mg/ml albumin, approximately 5 X 10(5) cells/ml and between 0.0 and 0.2 microgram/ml WGA. Membrane elasticity was characterized by the elastic shear modulus, which provided a measure of the resistance of the membrane...
