The accurate performance of the Vitek 2 GP67 card for detecting methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) is not known. We prospectively determined the ability of the Vitek 2 GP67 card to accurately detect methicillin-resistant CoNS, with mecA PCR results used as the gold standard for a 4-month period in 2012. Included in the study were 240 consecutively collected nonduplica...

OBJECTIVES We offered education, counseling, and family-based BRCA1/2 testing to women at increased risk of breast cancer and assessed (a) their reasons for participating and (b) whether source of recruitment, desire to help research (altruism), and the need to communicate with their affected relative about testing distinguish those who did and those who did not complete each phase of our proto...

We investigated the relevance of prominent reduction in turbidity macroscopically (MIC) and formation of aberrant hyphal tips microscopically (minimum effective concentration; MEC) in measuring the in vitro activity of caspofungin against Aspergillus and Fusarium. Caspofungin generated low MICs and MECs against Aspergillus, but not for Fusarium. While MICs increased inconsistently when the incu...

The susceptibility of 115 Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex clinical isolates to isoniazid, streptomycin, ethambutol, and rifampin was assessed by the MB/BacT and BACTEC 460TB systems. The correlation between the two tests was 98.3% for isoniazid, 100% for streptomycin and rifampin, and 95.8% for ethambutol. Turnaround times for antimicrobial susceptibility testing ranged from 5 to 11 days (me...

A patient with azole-refractory thrush-esophagitis responded initially to caspofungin, but the treatment eventually failed. In a murine model, caspofungin was effective against two early isolates for which the MICs of caspofungin were low, but it was less effective against a late isolate for which the MIC of caspofungin was greater. We concluded that there is a correlation between in vivo failu...

The use of Mueller-Hinton agar supplemented with citrated human or citrated sheep blood was compared with the use of routinely used Mueller-Hinton agar supplemented with defibrinated sheep blood for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Streptococcus pneumoniae. The alternate supplements were found to be unsatisfactory, particularly for testing resistant isolates, and therefore are not recomm...

To determine whether spatiotemporal information could help predict multidrug resistance at the time of tuberculosis diagnosis, we investigated tuberculosis patients who underwent drug susceptibility testing in Lima, Peru, during 2005-2007. We found that crude representation of spatial location at the level of the health center improved prediction of multidrug resistance.

OBJECTIVE The activity of voriconazole against Aspergillus spp. (n = 77) was tested by the Etest, disc diffusion and the NCCLS M38-A methods. METHODS Four Rhizomucor spp. isolates were included to study the suitability of the three susceptibility testing methods to detect isolates resistant to voriconazole. The disc diffusion method performed on Mueller-Hinton agar (Difco) supplemented with 2...

Recent international efforts to sequence the human genome have greatly enhanced our ability to test definitively for many genetic conditions. For many, this has been welcome, allowing the diagnosis of disorders that have been previously only suspected. This has also led to the advent of the ‘unpatient’ [1], where there is an increasing ability to test healthy individuals for genetic conditions ...

INTRODUCTION Advances in screening for infections improve the safety of donated blood. Transfusion-related bacterial sepsis, although not established in Zimbabwe, stills makes bacterial contamination of blood clinically relevant. METHODOLOGY This cross-sectional study was conducted in Harare. Bacteriological and antibiotic susceptibility testing were done using standard methods. RESULTS Of ...
