Ulam's method of discretising the dynamics of a smooth deterministic system to produce a nite state Markov chain approximation has been in use for over two decades. We review what can be done with the constructions, in the sense of how various dy-namical indicators and behaviour can be numerically extracted.

The Malcolm horizon (Malcolm, et. al., 1975) utilizes a large projected light stimulus (PVHD) as an attitude indicator in order to achieve a more compelling sense of roll than is obtained with smaller devices. The basic principle is that the larger stimulus is more similar to visibility of a real horizon during roll, and does not require fixation and attention to the degree that smaller display...

Aircraft engine manufacturers collect large amount of engine related data during flights. These data are used to detect anomalies in the engines in order to help companies optimize their maintenance costs. This article introduces and studies a generic methodology that allows one to build automatic early signs of anomaly detection in a way that is understandable by human operators who make the f...

Very high resolution satellite images are used to derive the spatial distributions of landscape ecological metrics within suburban areas. These indicators are weighted mean patch size and lacunarity computed from thresholded normalized difference vegetation index obtained from multispectral IKONOS-2 imagery. Spatial distributions of the metrics are derived for an extensive suburban area on the ...

With the emphasis on self-directed learning (SDL) and learner-controlled instruction (LCI) the author looks into the mechanism that has made several business and industrial sectors in the Western world progress significantly in the training and development field. The achievement of this strategy as compared to the traditional training of time-based rotation has made several organizations follow...

High-resolution functional imaging of neural activity in vivo relies on appropriate labeling methods. In this issue of Neuron, Nagayama et al. introduce a simple procedure for staining subsets of neurons with organic calcium indicator dyes via local electroporation. Neuronal populations are sparsely labeled, preserving the ability to resolve calcium signals in dendrites and synaptic structures.

BACKGROUND Over the years, a plethora of frailty assessment tools has been developed. These instruments can be basically grouped into two types of conceptualizations - unidimensional, based on the physical-biological dimension - and multidimensional, based on the connections among the physical, psychological, and social domains. At present, studies on the comparison between uni- and multidimens...

Biodiversity informatics (BDI) information is both highly localized and highly distributed. The temporal and spatial contexts of data collection events are generally of primary importance in BDI studies, and most studies are focused around specific localities. At the same time, data are collected by many groups working independently, but often at the same sites, leading to a distribution of dat...

This Online Appendix contains three sections of supporting materials to our paper “Investor Inattention and the Market Impact of Summary Statistics.” First, we provide details on the construction methodology of our instrument of stale macroeconomic information, the U.S. Index of Leading Economic Indicators (LEI). Second, we provide the theoretical details and derivations of our stylized model o...
