The most famous open problem in Monotone Operator Theory concerns the maximal monotonicity of the sum of two maximally monotone operators provided that Rockafellar’s constraint qualification holds. In this paper, we prove the maximal monotonicity of A+B provided that A,B are maximally monotone and A is a linear relation, as soon as Rockafellar’s constraint qualification holds: domA ∩ int domB 6...

Consider an operator equation F(u)=0 in a Hilbert space H and assume that this equation is solvable. Let us call the problem of solving this equation ill-posed if the operator F ′(u) is not boundedly invertible, and well-posed otherwise. A general method, Dynamical Systems Method (DSM), for solving linear and nonlinear illposed problems in H is presented. This method consists of the constructio...

We prove generalizations of Löwner’s results on matrix monotone functions to several variables. We give a characterization of when a function of d variables is locally monotone on d-tuples of commuting self-adjoint n-by-n matrices. We prove a generalization to several variables of Nevanlinna’s theorem describing analytic functions that map the upper half-plane to itself and satisfy a growth con...

Abstract. We provide a simplified proof of our operator formula for the number of monotone triangles with prescribed bottom row, which enables us to deduce three generalizations of the formula. One of the generalizations concerns a certain weighted enumeration of monotone triangles which specializes to the weighted enumeration of alternating sign matrices with respect to the number of −1s in th...

This tutorial paper presents the basic notation and results of monotone operators and operator splitting methods, with a focus on convex optimization. A very wide variety of algorithms, ranging from classical to recently developed, can be derived in a uniform way. The approach is to pose the original problem to be solved as one of finding a zero of an appropriate monotone operator; this problem...

The notion of monotone operator in a Hilbert space is extended, and a considerably broader class of possibly multivalued operators is introduced. It is shown that well-known Minty's theorems on maximal monotone operators in Hilbert spaces can be extended to the cases of operators belonging to the class. Typical examples of partial differential operators are given to illustrate that the results ...

Maximal monotone operator theory is about to turn (or just has turned) fifty. I intend to briefly survey the history of the subject. I shall try to explain why maximal monotone operators are both interesting and important—culminating with a description of the remarkable progress made during the past decade.

We establish variational principles for monotone and maximal bifunctions of Brøndsted-Rockafellar type by using our characterization of bifunction’s maximality in reflexive Banach spaces. As applications, we give an existence result of saddle point for convex-concave function and solve an approximate inclusion governed by a maximal monotone operator.

The subject is the applications of the use of quasi-entropy in finite dimensional spaces to many important quantities in quantum information. Operator monotone functions and relative modular operators are used. The origin is the relative entropy, and the f -divergence, monotone metrics, covariance and the χ2-divergence are the most important particular cases. The extension of monotone metrics t...

In this paper, we survey recent progress on the theory of maximally monotone operators in general Banach space. We also extend various of the results and leave some open questions. 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification: Primary 47H05; Secondary 46B10, 47A06, 47B65, 47N10, 90C25
