This paper presents a methodology for shape analysis of anatomical structures. A template shape is used as a unit, and a shape transformation mapping the template to a particular structure is used to quantify the shape of the structure with respect to the template. The geometric characteristics of the boundaries of the template and of an individual structure are used to deene corresponding regi...

Psychodopygus wellcomei (Diptera: Psychodidae), vector of Leishmania braziliensis braziliensis - causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil, cannot be distinguished from sympatric P. complexus either by morphometrics or isoenzyme profiles. We report here the use of cuticular hydrocarbon analysis in the successful separation of individual female P. wellcomei and P. complexus. This tech...

Protocylindrocorpus dendrophilus n. sp. is described from xylem samples taken from beetle infested slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelmann var. elliottii) in Central Louisiana. It is similar to P. goodeyi (Rühm) Paramonov, but differs by the possession of a protuberant and more posteriorly located vulva and in the position of the caudal papillae. Morphometrics of the male and female are presented.

Mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of important infectious diseases, causing millions of deaths every year and endangering approximately 3 billion people around the world. As such, precise identification of mosquito species is crucial for an understanding of epidemiological patterns of disease transmission. Currently, the most common method of mosquito identification relies on morp...
