BACKGROUND Novel therapies capable of targeting drug resistant clonogenic MM cells are required for more effective treatment of multiple myeloma. This study investigates the cytotoxicity of natural killer cell lines against bulk and clonogenic multiple myeloma and evaluates the tumor burden after NK cell therapy in a bioluminescent xenograft mouse model. DESIGN AND METHODS The cytotoxicity of...

We report a study on the activity of NK cells ('natural' killer cells) and K cells (antibody-dependent killer cells) in human peripheral blood in health and disease. The 'targets' used were cells of the Chang cell-line, sensitised with rabbit anti-Chang cell antibody for K cell activity, and killing was assessed by release of radiochromium at effector: target ratios of 50:1 and 100:1. The posit...

During mouse cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, a population of Ly49H(+) natural killer (NK) cells expands and is responsible for disease clearance through the induction of a "memory NK-cell response." Whether similar events occur in human CMV infection is unknown. In the present study, we characterized the kinetics of the NK-cell response to CMV reactivation in human recipients after hematopoiet...

Purpose To study the safety and clinical efficacy on combination of irreversible electroporation and allogeneic natural killer cell therapy for treating Stage III/IV pancreatic cancer, evaluating median progression free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). Results Adverse events of all patients were limited to grades 1 and 2, including local (mainly tussis 13.4%, nausea and emesis 7.1%,...

Abstract The progression and metastatic capacity of solid tumors are strongly influenced by immune cells in the tumor microenvironment. In non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), accumulation anti-inflammatory tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) is associated with worse clinical outcome resistance to therapy. Here we investigated landscape NSCLC presence protumoral TAMs expressing macrophage recepto...

Natural killer (NK) cells play a major role in antitumor immune responses. Recent results from our laboratory demonstrate the impact of the immunogenetic background on the activity of NK cells and hence on the outcome of hepatocellular carcinoma, disclosing perspectives for the development of NK-cell based therapies.

Surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment for solid tumors, but the postoperative period is uniquely inclined to the formation of metastases, largely due to the suppression of natural killer (NK) cells. We found that preoperative influenza vaccination prevents postoperative NK-cell dysfunction, attenuating tumor dissemination in murine models and promoting the activation of NK cells in ca...

Despite the availability and prosperity of chemotherapeutic agents, multidrug resistance (MDR) remains paramount obstacle in antitumor chemotherapy. Here, a natural killer (NK) cell-biomimetic nanoparticle (DMLN) is developed to overcome MDR by promoting entry doxorubicin (DOX) into tumor cells via cascade catalysis. DMLN synthesized compounding NK cell membrane with hollow MnO2 nanoparticles l...

Hypersensitivity to mosquito bites (HMB) is characterized by intense skin reactions at bite sites. The pathogenesis of HMB might be related to clonal lymphoproliferation of Epstein-Barr virus DNA-positive natural killer (NK) cells. We report the first case of HMB possibly associated with NK cell-derived large granular lymphocyte (NK-LGL) lymphocytosis in Korea.

Non-Hodgkins lymphoma of the Natural Killer (NK) cell type is rare. World Health Organisation recognises 3 NK-cell phenotypic entities; extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENK/TL); aggressive NK cell leukaemia (ANKL); and chronic lymphoproliferative disorders of NK cells (CLPD-NK) which is classified as a provisional entity. Though specific clinical, morphological and immunophenotypic cr...
