OBJECTIVE To provide updated information on the pre- and post-conception use of oral folic acid with or without a multivitamin/micronutrient supplement for the prevention of neural tube defects and other congenital anomalies. This will help physicians, midwives, nurses, and other health care workers to assist in the education of women about the proper use and dosage of folic acid/multivitamin s...

Lumbosacral spina bifida is a common debilitating birth defect whose multiple causes are poorly understood. Here, we provide the first genetic delineation of cholinergic nicotinic receptor alpha7 (Chrna7) expression and link the ablation of the Chrna7 cell lineage to this condition in the mouse. Using homologous recombination, an IRES-Cre bi-cistronic cassette was introduced into the 3' noncodi...

Cranial neurulation is the embryonic process responsible for formation of the brain primordium. In the mouse embryo, cranial neurulation is a piecemeal process with several initiation sites and two neuropores. Variation in the pattern of cranial neurulation occurs in different mouse strains, and a simpler version of this morphogenetic scheme has been described in human embryos. Exencephaly is m...

background: neural tube defects (ntd) are one of the leading causes of infant mortality worldwide. this study was designed to determine the prevalence of ntds among native fars ethnic groups during 1998-2005, and to identify maternal and demographic factors associated with ntds. methods: we performed a descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based study in dezyani hospital, gorgan, north of iran,...

OBJECTIVES To describe a new first-trimester sonographic landmark, posterior displacement of the midbrain and aqueduct of Sylvius, which may be useful in early screening for neural tube defects. METHODS This was a prospective study of 457 normal fetuses at 11 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks' gestation. We measured the distance from the posterior border of the aqueduct of Sylvius to the anterior border of...

OBJECTIVE Increased homocysteine concentrations have been associated with cardiac outflow tract defects. It has been hypothesized that cardiac neural crest cells were the target cells in these malformations. Cardiac neural crest cells migrate from the neural tube and contribute to the condensed mesenchyme of the aorticopulmonary septum and outflow tract cushions of the heart. The aim of this st...

the cause of neural tube defects (ntds) is multifactorial and in this case folic acid has an important role. since the neural tube is closed during 21-28 days of pregnancy, most of women are not informed about their pregnancy at this time, and as a result the golden time of folic acid consumption is missed. the aim of this study was evaluating the performance of pregnant women attending to tehr...

The size, composition and functioning of the spinal cord is likely to depend on appropriate numbers of progenitor and differentiated cells of a particular class, but little is known about how cell numbers are controlled in specific cell cohorts along the dorsoventral axis of the neural tube. Here, we show that FatJ cadherin, identified in a large-scale RNA interference (RNAi) screen of cadherin...

Neural tube defects (NTDs) in Hawaii between 1986 and 1997 were examined using data from a statewide birth defects surveillance system. The prevalence increased significantly over the twelve-year period. NTD prevalence did not appear to vary by place of residence. The relationship of type of defect, maternal age, and infant/fetus sex was similar to that reported in the literature.
