Torsional Alfvén waves propagating in the Earth’s core have been inferred by inversion techniques applied to geomagnetic models. They appear to propagate across the core but vanish at the equator, exchanging angular momentum between core and mantle. Assuming axial symmetry, we find that an electrically conducting layer at the bottom of the mantle can lead to total absorption of torsional waves ...

We investigate a possibility of heating of the loops and other closed magnetic structures in active regions of the solar corona by the flow of solar wind (plus other flows that may be present) across the magnetic field lines (that are perpendicular to the flow), in a similar manner as a conventional MHD generator works. A simple model is formulated which allows to calculate the typical currents...

We investigate the generalization of the spin-boson model to arbitrary spin size. The Born–Markov approximation is employed to derive a master equation in the regime of small coupling strengths to the environment. For spin one half, the master equation transforms into a set of Bloch equations, the solution of which is in good agreement with results of the spin-boson model for weak ohmic dissipa...

We formulate the problem of the formation of magnetically supercritical cores in magnetically subcritical parent molecular clouds, and the subsequent collapse of the cores to high densities, past the detachment of ions from magnetic field lines and into the opaque regime. We employ the six-fluid MHD equations, accounting for the effects of grains (negative, positive and neutral) including their...

This paper employs an analytic reconnection model to investigate the conditions under which Hall currents can influence reconnection and Ohmic dissipation rates. It is first noted that time dependent magnetohydrodynamic systems can be analyzed by decomposing the magnetic and velocity fields into guide field and reconnecting field components. A formally exact solution shows that Hall currents ca...

Explicit results for various quantum thermodynamic function (QTF) of a charged magneto-oscillator coupled to a heat bath at arbitrary temperature are demonstrated in this paper. Discernible expressions for different QTF in the two limits of very low and very high temperatures are presented for three popular heat bath models : Ohmic, single relaxation time and blackbody radiation. The central re...

It is pointed out that there exists an interesting strong and weak duality in the Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg potential curve crossing. A reliable perturbation theory can thus be formulated in the both limits of weak and strong interactions. It is shown that main characteristics of the potential crossing phenomena such as the LandauZener formula including its numerical coefficient are well-descri...

In this work, low temperature thermodynamic behaviour in the context of dissipative diamagnetism with anomalous coupling is analyzed. We find that finite dissipation substitutes the zero-coupling result of exponential decay of entropy by a power law behaviour at low temperature. For Ohmic bath, entropy vanishes linearly with temperature, T , in conformity with Nernst’s theorem. It is also shown...

In disordered itinerant magnets with arbitrary symmetry of the order parameter, the conventional quantum critical point between the ordered phase and the paramagnetic Fermi liquid (PMFL) is destroyed due to the formation of an intervening cluster glass (CG) phase. In this Letter, we discuss the quantum critical behavior at the CG-PMFL transition for systems with continuous symmetry. We show tha...
