A 64-year-old woman presented with typical angina during exercise for 2 weeks. An exercise treadmill test provoked similar chest pain and showed abnormal ST segments suggestive of myocardial ischemia during peak exercise. A prospectively ECG-triggered adaptive dual-source coronary computed tomography angiography ruled out coronary artery disease. Instead it demonstrated a nonenhanced clover-lik...
The primary cardiac tumors are extremely rare tumors that arise from the normal cardiac tissues. There are benign variants (mostly myxoma) and malignant tumors. Fibroelastoma (FE) is the most common primary tumor, of which myxoma is the most common subtype followed by papillary fibroelastomas (PFE).They account for the majority of primary heart valvular tumors that mainly involve the left (mitr...
Primary intracardiac tumors are rare, with prevalence between 0.0017% and 0.19% from non-selected autopsy studies. Approximately 75% are benign and almost half of them are myxomas. The remaining tumors are divided among rhabdomyomas, lipomas and fibroelastomas. Myxomas are the most common intracardiac tumors in adult age and rhabdomyomas the most common among pediatric population. Papillary fib...
Case histories of proposed life insurance are presented to introduce the topic of cardiac valvular tumors. Using fibroelastoma as the prototypical cardiac tumor, pathology, diagnosis, echocardiographic findings and clinical course are reviewed, based on available clinical literature. Although the natural history of benign cardiac tumors is uncertain, because of the risk of adverse outcomes, cas...
UNLABELLED A papillary fibroelastoma is a rare, avascular, cardiac tumour that is often found incidentally using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). Peripheral i.v. injection of a microbubble contrast agent is often used to characterize abnormal masses within the heart allowing further delineation of physical features, the area of attachment, and vascularity of the mass in order to differenti...
A 48-year-old female with arterial hypertension presented to a community hospital with an inferior ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Coronary angiography showed patent epicardial coronary arteries with TIMI 3 flow and myocardial blush grade 3. The acute phase of STEMI was complicated by ventricular fibrillation that was treated promptly with electrical cardioversion. The ST-elevation ...
Myxoma of the aortic valve is an exceedingly uncommon condition. In this article, we report the case of a 72-year-old man with myxoma arising from the aortic valve. We extirpated the mass and repaired the aortic valve with the patient under cardiopulmonary bypass. The postoperative course was uneventful. Histological examination confirmed that the mass was a myxoma.
