A cross-national study, 49 samples in 38 nations (n = 4,344), investigates whether national peace and conflict reflect ambivalent warmth and competence stereotypes: High-conflict societies (Pakistan) may need clearcut, unambivalent group images distinguishing friends from foes. Highly peaceful countries (Denmark) also may need less ambivalence because most groups occupy the shared national iden...

Dual-use space technology poses a threat to the original peaceful mandate of scientific research, being de facto a proxy for future military confrontation in space. Following the example of the USA, the European Union and consortia of European nations are starting to flatten the barriers between military, commercial and scientific missions and programmes, under pressure from security issues and...

Inter-group encounters among baboons range from peaceful to aggressive.During 23 months we observed 110 inter-group interactions involving four groups of chacma baboons in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Especially, we propose 'friend selection strategies' (FSSs),...

What do a piece of plumbing pipe, some wire netting, some adhesive tape, two loops of nylon webbing and a carabiner have in common? Nothing, until they are assembled, in a design. In turn, the object these components comprise comes into being only with the presence of human beings. These are the components of a device known as a ‘lock-on’; some sundry objects that you would find in a builders’ ...

This paper presents a simple model of linguistic priming between languages in contact, based on the utterance selection model (USM) for language change of Baxter et al. (2006). It will be shown that the emergence or the non-emergence of a new contact language depends on the way potentially bilingual agents choose a language to communicate.
