BACKGROUND An association of bullous pemphigoid with neurological disorders has been reported. The objectives of this study were to review the clinical characteristics of patients with bullous pemphigoid and compare the association between bullous pemphigoid and various neurological disorders and comorbidities. METHODS This was a retrospective case-control study involving 43 patients with bul...
Bullous pemphigoid is a subepidermal autoimmune blistering disease associated with autoantibodies to the hemidesmosomal bullous pemphigoid antigens 180 and 230. Most sera from bullous pemphigoid patients recognize epitopes within the N-terminal NC16A portion of the bullous pemphigoid 180 ectodomain. Using cryosections of human skin, patients' sera were shown to generate dermal-epidermal separat...
34-year-old African American female with history of pemphigoid presented with hemoptysis. Patient was found to have mucous membrane pemphigoid involving the oropharynx and extending to trachea, till just above main stem carina. Four other cases described mucosal pemphigoid involving the trachea. We hereby present a brief review of current consensus on management of mucous membrane pemphigoid wi...
Dyshidrosiform pemphigoid is an acquired autoimmune variant of bullous pemphigoid with persistent vesicobullous eruptions localized on the palms or soles, or both. It generally occurs in the elderly and is rarely reported in childhood. Hereby, we describe the first case of dyshidrosiform pemphigoid in a 12-year-old child, which was limited to the dorsal hands and treated successfully with dapso...
The authors present their experience related to the diagnosis, treatment, and followup of 431 patients with bullous pemphigoid, 14 patients with juvenile bullous pemphigoid, and 273 patients with pemphigus. The detection of autoantibodies plays an outstanding role in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Paraneoplastic pemphigoid is suggested to be a distinct entity from the group of bullou...
A utoimmune diseases probably have a multitude of causes. It is obvious that exogenous agents, particularly drugs, may trigger the development of autoimmune responses leading to bullous eruptions. In the literature several cases of drug-induced (disseminated) bullous pemphigoid (BP) have been reported (see article by Fellner in this issue); however, localized variants of pemphigoid and acquired...
Background and Aim: Bullous pemphigoid is an acquired autoimmune disease with subepidermal blisters commonly seen in the elderly over 60 years old. The exact survival rate of the patients with bullous pemphigoid was not available in Iran. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors of 5-year mortality of bullous pemphigoid patients. Methods: In this retrospective study, 66 bul...
A 52 year old man developed bullous pemphigoid, Coombs' positive haemolytic anaemia and diarrhoea related to the use of mefenamic acid. Clinical manifestation of the bullous pemphigoid, haemolytic anaemia and diarrhoea resolved following discontinuation of the mefenamic acid. Mefenamic acid should be added to the list of agents that are known to induce bullous pemphigoid.
