This paper explores the linguistic and technical challenges in creating a typological database for demonstrative and personal pronouns. Our database identifies a fundamental difference between morphological (or semantic) features that are relatively fixed across languages and those that are highly variable from one language to the next.
Possessiveness at a certain stage of development could be expressed by the forms personal pronouns. In many languages, verbs with special indicators belonging, which are possessive, enclitic pronouns, form possessive conjugation. The material identity considered in and nouns shows their common origin. As noun verb differentiated, these single formants were subjected to splitting: they remained ...
Person and object reference involves both morpho-syntax and pragmatics. In the acquisition of reference, therefore, children are faced with learning diverse skills. Firstly, they have to acquire the relevant morpho-syntactic forms (e.g. nouns, pronouns). Secondly, in pragmatics they need to learn amongst other things to take the listener’s perspective into account. There has been considerable w...

Speakers need to use a variety of referring expressions (REs) (e.g. full noun phrases, pronouns or null forms) in pragmatically appropriate ways to produce coherent narratives. Languages, however, differ from each other in terms of a) whether REs as arguments can be dropped or not and b) whether personal pronouns encode gender or not. Here we examine two languages that differ from each other in...
We present a flexible approach for extracting hierarchical classifications from linguistic data. To this end, the framework of observational logic is introduced, which extends the logic that underlies standard Formal Concept Analysis by allowing disjunctive rules and exclusions. We give a rigorous mathematical characterization of how the chosen rule type affects the structure of the induced hie...
Our study examined the relationships of relational pronouns used in parental conversation to the quality of early family interactions, as indexed by Family Alliance (FA). We hypothesized that more positive family interactions were associated with the use of more we-pronouns (e.g., we, us, our; we-ness) and fewer I- and you-pronouns (e.g., I, me, you, your; separateness) by both mothers and fath...
