We report the mechanical properties of a framework structure, [Cu2F(HF)(HF2)(pyz)4][(SbF6)2]n (pyz = pyrazine), in which [Cu(pyz)2](2+) layers are pillared by HF2(-) anions containing the exceptionally strong F-H···F hydrogen bonds. Nanoindentation studies on single-crystals clearly demonstrate that such bonds are extremely robust and mechanically comparable with coordination bonds in this system.

A bimetallic pillared-layer coordination framework {[Mn(3)(bipy)(3)(H(2)O)(4)][Cr(CN)(6)](2)·2(bipy)·4(H(2)O)}(n) has been constructed using a cyanometallate anion ([Cr(CN)(6)](3-)) and an organic linker (4,4'-bipyridyl) that provides high heat of hydrogen adsorption (∼11.5 kJ mol(-1)) and shows guest dependent magnetic modulation.

Discrete homo Cu-Cu-Cu and hetero Cu-Pd-Cu or Cu-Co-Cu metal arrays are prepared within an organic-pillared coordination box by inserting M(ii)-azaporphine/porphine cartridges (M = Cu(ii), Pd(ii) or Co(ii)), where the metal arrays show unique spin interactions in ESR: in particular, Deltam(s) = 3 for the Cu-Cu-Cu array.

Herein, we demonstrate the robustness of layer-by-layer (LbL)-assembled, pillared-paddlewheel-type MOF films toward conversion to new or modified MOFs via solvent-assisted linker exchange (SALE) and post-assembly linker metalation. Further, we show that LbL synthesis can afford MOFs that have proven inaccessible through other de novo strategies.

A coordination terpolymerization strategy is introduced to alter the connectivity within layers of a pillared-layer coordination polymer. Assembling two different dicarboxylate linkers around a metal cluster in the layer suppresses interpenetration while enabling formation of a rectangular 2D grid structure.

A topological isomer based on Zn2 paddlewheel, dicarboxylate, and diamine ligands is synthesized by solvothermal methods after careful modulation of the reaction conditions. The new framework is characterized by a pillared Kagome net topology and possesses a sustainable pore structure with high surface area (approximately 2400 m2/g) and large hexagonal channels (approximately 15 A).
