COVID-19 emerged as a horrible nightmare for the humans on earth. This was not only because of nature illness, diversity symptoms, its bizarre course and unpredictable fate but also due to broad spectrum challenges healthcare system faced across globe. These include limited knowledge about disease, shortage dedicated facilities, gross deficiencies Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), diagnostic...
The Pima Indian population of Arizona has one of the highest prevalence of diabetes of any population in the world, and the Pima Indians of the Gila River Indian Community have probably been the most studied group for the causes and consequences of diabetes. They develop what would be considered to be classic type 2 diabetes, characterized by obesity and insulin resistance with progression to d...
Classification problems are often encountered in medical diagnosis. This paper presents an introduction to classification theory and shows how artificial neural networks can be used for classification. We also map out a bootstrapped procedure for interval estimation of posterior probabilities. The entire procedure is illustrated using the diabetes mellitus data in Pima Indians.
OBJECTIVE A genome-wide association study (GWAS) in Pima Indians (n = 413) identified variation in the ataxin-2 binding protein 1 gene (A2BP1) that was associated with percent body fat. On the basis of this association and the obese phenotype of ataxin-2 knockout mice, A2BP1 was genetically and functionally analyzed to assess its potential role in human obesity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Va...

(Egyptian and Pima) produces single celled fiber trichomes that are the longest and richest in cellulosic contents in the plant kingdom. Developmental dissection of fiber at the transcriptional level is cruci...
BACKGROUND The effect of hypertension on mortality was examined in 5284 Pima Indians, 1698 of whom had type 2 diabetes at baseline or developed it during follow-up. METHODS AND RESULTS During a median follow-up of 12.2 years (range, 0.01 to 24.8 years), 470 nondiabetic subjects and 488 diabetic subjects died. In the nondiabetic subjects, 45 of the deaths were due to cardiovascular disease, 20...
High concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) are a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes in Pima Indians. In vitro and in vivo, chronic elevation of NEFA decreases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. We hypothesized that high fasting plasma NEFA would increase the risk of type 2 diabetes by inducing a worsening of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in Pima Indians. To test t...
