Received, November 25, 2007. Accepted, June 4, 2008. Recent technological advances and collaborative efforts between neurosurgeons and neurointensivists have reduced the overall aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) fatality rate from 50% to nearly 20% (Table 1) (96, 115). Despite this encouraging trend, there continues to be room for improvement in the outlook for poorgrade SAH. While goodg...

Sun glint, the specular reflection of light from water surfaces, is a serious confounding factor for remote sensing of water column properties and benthos. This paper reviews current techniques to estimate and remove the glint radiance component from imagery. Methods for processing of ocean color images use statistical sea surface models to predict the glint from the sun and sensor positions an...

The provision point mechanism as a method of funding threshold public goods is extended with refund bonuses. Each contributor not only has his contribution refunded in the case of insufficient contributions but also receives a refund bonus proportional to his proposed contribution. As long as the refund bonus pool does not exceed the net value of the public good, in equilibrium the public good ...

BACKGROUND Sex-specific prediction models for low hemoglobin (Hb) deferral have been developed in Dutch whole blood donors. In this study, we validated and updated the models in a cohort of Swiss whole blood donors. METHODS Prospectively collected data from 53,772 Swiss whole blood donors were used. The predictive performance of the Dutch models was assessed in terms of calibration (agreement...

Any good journalist knows that, if you can’t deliver the facts, at least you can offer up a bit of entertainment. Genome scientists have co-opted that strategy when it comes to the seemingly immortal question of how many human genes there are. Frankly, nobody seems to have a clue. So at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory genome meeting this May, they decided to collect a different form of data —...

What to do on a hot summer afternoon? Sneak over and dip into the neighbor’s pool! This seems to be the story for the newest inhibitors of the Cdc25 phosphatases. Brisson et al. (2004), in this issue, present one of the most promising reversible competitive Cdc25 inhibitors to date, blocking cell cycle progression and causing growth arrest of cancer cell lines. Before considering the benefits o...

The Stone tautologies are known to have polynomial size resolution refutations and require exponential size regular refutations. We prove that the Stone tautologies also have polynomial size proofs in both pool resolution and the proof system of regular tree-like resolution with input lemmas (regRTI). Therefore, the Stone tautologies do not separate resolution from DPLL with clause learning.
