PURPOSE Candida albicans (C. albicans) and Proteus species are causative agents in a variety of opportunistic nosocomial infections, and their ability to form biofilms is known to be a virulence factor. In this study, the influence of co-cultivation with Proteus vulgaris (P. vulgaris) and Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis) on C. albicans biofilm formation and its underlying mechanisms were examin...

Using the CoCo Cold Coronagraph at NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea, we observed the uranian satellites Miranda, Puck, Portia, and Rosalind and the neptunian satellite Proteus in the near infrared (JHK) to determine the albedos of those faint satellites. In V-J, all of Puck, Portia, Rosalind, and Proteus are very blue, similar to the colors of many icy satellites and of water ice...

Europe's obligate cave-dwelling amphibian Proteus anguinus inhabits subterranean waters of the north-western Balkan Peninsula. Because only fragments of its habitat are accessible to humans, this endangered salamander's exact distribution has been difficult to establish. Here we introduce a quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction-based environmental DNA (eDNA) approach to detect the pr...

Analyzing loops is very important for various software engineering tasks such as bug detection, test case generation and program optimization. However, loops are very challenging structures for program analysis, especially when (nested) loops contain multiple paths that have complex interleaving relationships. In this paper, we propose the path dependency automaton (PDA) to capture the dependen...

We present a rare case of multifocal Proteus mirabilis osteomyelitis in an HIV-positive patient. Despite the patient's good immune status as assessed by her CD4 cell count and the aggressive treatment, she eventually underwent bilateral above-knee amputations to eradicate the infection. Multifocal Proteus mirabilis osteomyelitis can have an unpredictable clinical course with a severe outcome in...

Many organizations envision web services as an enabling component of Internet-scale computing. A final vision of web services is to realize a dynamic environment that identifies, composes and executes web services in response to a query. This vision shapes the design and implementation of Proteus. In addition to describing Proteus’ novel components, this paper outlines its initial system design.

An electron microscope study of the nuclear membrane of Amoeba proteus by thin sectioning techniques has revealed an ultrastructure in the outer layer of the membrane that is homologous to the pores and annuli observed in the nuclear membranes of many other cell types studied by these techniques. An inner honeycombed layer apparently unique to Amoeba proteus is also described.
