We introduce an autoregressive-type model of prices in financial market taking into account the self-modulation effect. We find that traders are mainly using strategies with weighted feedbacks of past prices. These feedbacks are responsible for the slow diffusion in short times, apparent trends and power law distribution of price changes.

Collaborative recommendation has attracted various research works in recent years. However, an important problem setting, i.e., ‘‘a user examined several items but only rated a few’’, has not received much attention yet. We coin this problem heterogeneous collaborative recommendation (HCR) from the perspective of users’ heterogeneous feedbacks of implicit examinations and explicit ratings. In o...

Explicit formulas of smooth time-varying state feedbacks, which make the origin of an underactuated surface vessel globally uniformly asymptotically stable, are proposed. The construction of the feedback extensively relies on the backstepping approach. The feedbacks constructed are time-periodic functions.

We present our preliminary developments on a biofeedback interface for Western operatic style training, combining performance and result biofeedback. Electromyographic performance feedbacks, as well as formant-tuning result feedbacks are displayed visually, using continuously scrolling displays, or discrete post-trial evaluations. Our final aim is to investigate electroencephalographic (EEG) me...

For coupled human and natural systems (CHANS), sustainability can be defined operationally as a feasible, desirable set of flows (material, currency, information, energy, individuals, etc.) that can be maintained despite internal changes and changes in the environment. Sustainable development can be defined as the process by which CHANS can be moved toward sustainability. Specific indicators th...

An additional factor that is not as well studied, but potentially important is the ecological feedbacks between organisms and their local environment, whereby organisms modify the environment and aff ect the survival and reproduction of individuals that subsequently utilize the altered environment. Well-documented examples of organism – environment feedbacks include those between plants and soi...

Interactions between natural selection and environmental change are well recognized and sit at the core of ecology and evolutionary biology. Reciprocal interactions between ecology and evolution, eco-evolutionary feedbacks, are less well studied, even though they may be critical for understanding the evolution of biological diversity, the structure of communities and the function of ecosystems....

Feedbacks are widely considered to be the largest source of uncertainty in determining the sensitivity of the climate system to increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations, yet the ability to diagnose them from observations has remained controversial. Here a simple model is used to demonstrate that any nonfeedback source of top-of-atmosphere radiative flux variations can cause temper...

The recognition of feedbacks between plants and their physical environment is important in biogeography. At alpine treeline, positive feedbacks for trees versus tundra include warming the canopy via lower albedo, increasing nutrients and water by increasing local atmospheric deposition, and reducing transpiration and abrasion by slowing wind; negative feedbacks include shading and cooler soil. ...
