The Geoscope is an instrument for globally comparative observation and analysis of regions with respect to measurements that have an impact on sustainability. In this sense, the Geoscope is an observation instrument for the anthropocene. This is the era which humankind has just entered and where the tight interlinkages between human and natural environment have become obvious and are taken into...

We prove that if G is a graph and r1, . . . , rk ∈ Z≥0 such that ∑k i=1 ri ≥ ∆(G) + 2 − k then V (G) can be partitioned into sets V1, . . . , Vk such that ∆(G[Vi]) ≤ ri and G[Vi] contains no non-complete ri-regular components for each 1 ≤ i ≤ k. In particular, the vertex set of any graph G can be partitioned into ⌈ ∆(G)+2 3 ⌉ sets, each of which induces a disjoint union of triangles and paths.

Measuring the polarization of a single photon typically results in its destruction. We propose, demonstrate, and completely characterize a quantum nondemolition (QND) scheme for realizing such a measurement nondestructively. This scheme uses only linear optics and photodetection of ancillary modes to induce a strong nonlinearity at the single-photon level, nondeterministically. We vary this QND...

In cases of cysticercosis, seizures and other symptoms occur in persons with only calcified brain lesions. The presence of perilesional edema has been documented in association with calcified lesions in symptomatic patients, but the frequency of this complication and characteristics of the patients who develop it are not known. Patients in Peru and the United States with neurocysticercosis, doc...

When the editor invites comment on a response to an analysis of a criticism of a protocol already defended by the author in this journal, the issue is clearly contentious. I will comment briefly on Thomas's paper in this issue of the journal, and look at points of agreement as well as dissent.
