Abstract. We analyze the linear conductance of a semiconductor quantum wire containing a region where a local Rashba spin-orbit interaction is present. We show that Fano lineshapes appear in the conductance due to the formation of quasi bound states which interfere with the direct transmission along the wire, a mechanism that we term the Fano-Rashba effect. We obtain the numerical solution of t...

We study the low-temperature transport properties of 1D quantum wires as the confinement strength V_{conf} and the carrier density n_{1D} are varied using a combination of split gates and a top gate in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. At intermediate V_{conf} and n_{1D}, we observe a jump in conductance to 4e;{2}/h, suggesting a double wire. On further reducing n_{1D}, plateau at 2e;{2}/h returns....

We consider theoretically the formation and stability of quasi-one-dimensional many-body excitons in GaAs quantum wire structures under external photoexcitation conditions by solving the dynamically screened Bethe-Salpeter equation for realistic Coulomb interaction. In agreement with several recent experimental findings the calculated excitonic peak shows weak carrier-density dependence up to (...

We calculate the electronic resistivity of a GaAs-based semiconductor quantum wire in the presence of acoustic phonon scattering. We find that the usual Drude-Boltzmann transport theory leads to a low temperature activated behavior instead of the well-known Bloch-Grüneisen power law. Many-body electron-phonon renormalization, which is entirely negligible in higher dimensional systems, has a dra...

We consider a physical model of ultrafast evolution of an initial electron distribution in a quantum wire. The electron evolution is described by a quantum-kinetic equation accounting for the interaction with phonons. A Monte Carlo method has been developed for solving the equation. GRID technologies are implemented due to the large computational efforts imposed by the quantum character of the ...

We report measurements of the compressibility of a one-dimensional quantum wire, defined in the upper well of a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum well heterostructure. A wire defined simultaneously in the lower well probes the ability of the upper wire to screen the electric field from a biased surface gate. The technique is sensitive enough to resolve spin splitting of the subbands in the presence of...
