Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, Spin Trapping, Free Radicals N-[tert-13C]Butyl C-phenyl nitrone (PBN-[tert-13C]) has been synthesized for an EPR spin trapping competition study. The newly synthesized PBN-[tert-13C] shows different 13C-hyperfine splitting constants (a13C) when it traps free radicals as compared to another 13C-labeled PBN analogue, N-tert-butyl C-phenyl [nitronyl-13C]nitrone (PB...

The cytotoxic effects of ferric nitrilotriacetate (Fe-NTA) have been considered to be caused by free radicals produced by the drug. The present study was carried out to determine whether or not cytotoxic effects of Fe-NTA on cell growth and lipoperoxide formation of Chinese hamster cells were reduced by antioxidants. Using a spin trapping technique, we found that hydroxyl radical formation in t...

Black BiOCl with oxygen vacancies was prepared by UV light irradiation with Ar blowing. The as-prepared black BiOCl sample showed 20 times higher visible light photocatalytic activity than white BiOCl for RhB degradation. The trapping experiment showed that the superoxide radical (O(2)(•-)) and holes (h(+)) were the main active species in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation.

We report herein Cu-catalyzed aerobic oxygenation of aliphatic C-H bonds with hydroperoxides, which proceeds by 1,5-H radical shift of putative oxygen-centered radicals (O-radicals) derived from hydroperoxides followed by trapping of the resulting carbon-centered radicals with molecular oxygen.

Here we report the use of 10-phenylphenothiazine (PTH) as an inexpensive, highly reducing metal-free photocatalyst for the reduction of carbon-halogen bonds via the trapping of carbon-centered radical intermediates with a mild hydrogen atom donor. Dehalogenations were carried out on various substrates with excellent yields at room temperature in the presence of air.

Reactions of super-electron-donors (SEDs) derived from 4-dimethylaminopyridine and from N-methylbenzimidazole with α-methoxy-γ-alkoxyalkyl iodides lead to liberation of the γ-alkoxy groups as their alcohols. This is consistent with generation of alkyl radicals from the alkyl halide precursors, and trapping of these radicals by the radical-cation of the SED, followed by a heterolytic fragmentation.

Astaxanthin is a coloring agent which is used as a feed additive in aquaculture nutrition. Recently, potential health benefits of astaxanthin have been discussed which may be partly related to its free radical scavenging and antioxidant properties. Our electron spin resonance (ESR) and spin trapping data suggest that synthetic astaxanthin is a potent free radical scavenger in terms of diphenylp...

Hydrazines are known to undergo oxidative activation in several enzymatic systems in vitro. Free radicals or carbonium ions have been proposed as active intermediates during such activation. The toxic effects elicited by hydrazines have also been linked to free radical-mediated activation. In this report, we have reviewed the identification of organic free radicals from hydrazines by direct ESR...

Free radicals are thought to be key intermediates in the oxidation of wine, but their nature has not been established. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to detect and identify several free radical species in wine under oxidative conditions with the aid of spin traps. The 1-hydroxylethyl radical was the sole radical species observed when α-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitr...
