A notchlike bone defect in the basiocciput due to a prominent fossa navicularis was incidentally discovered in a patient referred for radiologic evaluation of sinusitis. MR images showed that the osseous defect was filled with lymphoid tissue of the pharyngeal tonsil. The occurrence of this anatomic variant is discussed, with reference to ancient anatomic works.
This study sets the objective to involve undergraduate students in the evaluation of radiologic sciences and medical imaging technology programmes in Sudanese universities. Based on the analysis of survey results in which the participants (BSc students undertaking radiologic sciences and medical imaging technology programmes at university level) are asked to answer both closed and open-ended qu...
BACKGROUND Nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) are the most frequent pituitary tumors. Due to the lack of hormonal hypersecretion, posttreatment follow-up evaluation of NFPAs is challenging. OBJECTIVE To create evidence-based guidelines in an attempt to formulate guidance for posttreatment follow-up in a consistent, rigorous, and cost-effective way. METHODS An extensive literature sea...
OBJECTIVE To determine the precise radiologic findings in Wolfram syndrome (WFS) patients using objective techniques in order to better define the reference population for the clinical evaluation. METHODS Sixteen patients (6 males and 10 females) with WFS found in 4 families were included in this study. Fourteen patients with WFS-2 came from 3 families while 2 patients with WFS-1 from one fam...
Radiologic evaluation of 15 patients with central nervous system sarcoidosis is reported together with a review of the literature. The hydrocephalus that is often associated is discussed in relation to known pathogenetic aspects of the disease process. Intracranial sarcoid mass lesions, formerly thought to be a very rare manifestation of this disease, have been seen more often since the advent ...
A case of E. coli meningitis in a patient with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt was encountered recently at our institution . A shunt-induced bowel perforation was demonstrated by injecting contrast material percutaneously into the proximal end of the shunt. Apparently, retrograde spread of normal bowel flora via the shunt was responsible for his unusual Gram-negative meningitis. Because of the dis...
Lingual duplication cysts are rare in the pediatric population and exceedingly rare in adults. Imaging is an important part of the evaluation of lingual lesions and is helpful in defining the location and extent for surgical planning. We present a lingual duplication cyst and discuss the imaging findings and radiologic differential diagnosis.
Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are pancreatic cancer precursors incidentally discovered by cross-sectional imaging. Consensus guidelines for IPMN management rely on standard radiologic features to predict pathology, but they lack accuracy. Using a retrospective cohort of 38 surgically-resected, pathologically-confirmed IPMNs (20 benign; 18 malignant) with preoperative computed...
A newborn who presents for care with bruising, lethargy, or poor feeding requires immediate evaluation. It is important to take a complete history and physical examination determine what further testing warranted. Differential diagnoses should include, but are not limited to, nonaccidental trauma, sepsis, clotting disorders. the baby include medications after birth, vaccination history, nutriti...
Chest pain is one of the most common presentations in emergency medicine. The initial evaluation should always consider life-threatening causes such as aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, pericarditis, and esophageal perforation. Radiographic imaging is performed in tandem with the initial clinical assessment and stabilization of the patient. Radiologic findi...
