本稿は1978～2018年の中国の地域所得格差を定量的に把握し，観測期間に下落してから上昇し，2000年代中期再び下落するトレンドが確認された。さらに，格差計測の結果を利用し回帰分析を行って，2002年以降貿易の格差拡大の影響は弱まり，海外直接投資はさらに縮小の影響に変わった結果を得た。政策的な背景を考えると，格差指数や各要因影響の変化は中国の地域発展政策の転換につながっていると結論づけられる。
