Clostridium difficile, belonging to ribotype 018 (RT018), is one of the most prevalent genotypes circulating in hospital settings in Italy. Here, we report the draft genome of C. difficile CD8-15 belonging to RT018, isolated from a patient with fatal C. difficile-associated infection.

To determine the incidence rate of infections with North American pulsed-field types 7 and 8 (NAP7/NAP8) strains of Clostrodium difficile, ribotype 078, and toxinotype V strains, we examined data collected for the Canadian Nosocomial Infections Surveillance Program (CNISP) CDI surveillance project during 2004-2008. Incidence of human infections increased from 0.5% in 2004/2005 to 1.6% in 2008.

Abstract Background: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has been a major growing problem in hospitals in recent years. Detection of the source of Clostridium difficile strains is of importance for the control of the nosocomial spread of this microorganism. This study was done to identify C.difficile isolates by polymerase chain reaction, (PCR), ribotyping. Materials and methods: The descript...

Recent evidence strongly suggests an association between the use of fluoroquinolones and Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). Resistance to fluoroquinolones has been described not only in the hypervirulent strain 027, but also in other important PCR ribotypes circulating in hospital settings. In a European prospective study conducted in 2005, strains resistant to moxifloxacin represented 37.5...

BACKGROUND Marked increases in Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) incidence, driven by epidemic strain spread, is a global phenomenon. METHODS The Clostridium difficile Ribotyping Network (CDRN) was established in 2007 as part of enhanced CDI surveillance in England, to facilitate the recognition and control of epidemic strains. We report on changes in CDI epidemiology in England in the fi...

A total of 31 bacterial isolates that have potential Alexandrium cyst formation-promoting activity (Alex-CFPB) were isolated from Hiroshima Bay (Japan), which is characterized by seasonal blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense. The population structure of Alex-CFPB was analyzed by means of restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the 16S rRNA genes (16S rDNA). Four...

This study investigates the contamination of foods and surfaces with Clostridium difficile in a single nursing home. C. difficile PCR-ribotype 078 was found in one food sample and in none of the tested surfaces. These results indicate that food and surfaces are an unlikely source of C. difficile infection in this setting.

Uncultured predominant Bacillus ribotype DA001 in Dutch Drentse A grassland soils, as revealed by its 16S rRNA sequence, was detected in soil by fluorescent whole-cell in situ hybridization. A prominent rod-shaped cell type was identified in bacterial suspensions prepared from soil by a multiple 16S rRNA probing approach.

The aim of this study was to determine the reproducibility of small volume repeat sampling from replicate bioreactors with stabilized continuous-flow chicken cecal bacterial communities. Bacterial concentration and diversity were analyzed by phenotypic, biochemical and ribotype analysis. Significant differences in concentrations and variations in diversity were found in replicate bioreactors.
