Giant right atrium is a rarely reported condition, especially in intrauterine life. It may be mistaken with pericardial effusion and Ebstein's anomaly, which are more common causes of right atrial enlargement. We present a case of prenatal diagnosis of giant right atrium detected at 29 weeks of gestation by fetal echocardiography.
A persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is formed by the remains of the oblique vein of the left atrium, which is not completely degenerated during embryonic development. The incidence is approximately 0.3% in the general population. Approximately 80-92% of PLSVCs drain into the right atrium through the coronary sinus. This report describes a rare case of PLSVC in which the coronary sinus ...
Prostacyclins are vasodilatory agents used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. The direct effects of prostacyclins on right heart function are still not clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible direct inotropic properties of clinical available prostacyclin mimetics in the normal and the pressure-overloaded human right atrium. Trabeculae from the right at...
delayed evaluation and management of penetrating cardiac injuries especially mortar fragments were performed in 30 war victims in the shahid rajai heart hospital, tehran. all were men with a mean age of 20.7 years. pleuritic chest pain was the most common symptom (53.3%), while physical examination was negative in the majority of cases (66.8%). 50 percent of the cases had pericardial effusion o...
Anomalous pulmonary venous return (APVR) is a rare cardiac anomaly defined as one or more pulmonary veins draining into a structure other than the left atrium, with venous return directly or indirectly to the right atrium. The most common form is partial APVR, in which one to three pulmonary veins drain into systemic veins or into the right atrium. We report the case of a woman diagnosed with p...
The crista terminalis and Eustachian ridge are normal anatomical structures within the right atrium that are not normally looked for or visualised in the standard views obtained while performing a transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE). In this case report, the prominent terminal ridge (a normal anatomical variant) appeared as a "mass" in the right atrium that needed to be differentiated from a pat...
A 63-year-old man presented with acute congestive heart failure and was found to have a continuous murmur. Two years earlier, he had an inferior myocardial infarct, when no murmurs were heard. Angiography showed a right coronary artery aneurysm communicating with the right atrium. The distal vessel was occluded. The aneurysm was resected and the patient remains well. It is proposed that this wa...
A73-year-old man with past medical history of mechanical aortic valve replacement, metastatic melanoma of unknown primaries with liver metastasis, presented with progressive shortness of breath and dyspnea on exertion. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) showed a large homogenous mass completely occupying the right atrial cavity and extending to and nearly obstructing the inflow area of the tr...
