Sixteen children with late onset Perthes' disease were surgically treated at an average age of 12 years 1 month (9 years 4 months to 15 years) by soft tissue release and articulated hip distraction. Two patients had additional diagnosis of Down syndrome and one suffered from geleophysic epiphyseal dysplasia. Fifteen hips were graded Catterall IV and Herring C and one hip was graded Catterall II...

Most studies on hydrogel swelling instability have been focused on a constrained boundary condition. In this paper, we studied the mechanical instability of a piece of disc-shaped hydrogel during free swelling. The fast swelling of the gel induces two swelling mismatches; a surface-inner layer mismatch and an annulus-disc mismatch, which lead to the formation of a surface crease pattern and a s...

This paper compares two different local surface shape description methods. The general goal of surface shape description methods is to classify different surface shapes from range data. One well-known method to classify patches of various shapes is the HK classification space [2, 1, 10]. Another way to classify patches is the SC method introduced by Koenderink [9]. This paper presents several e...

The problem of the form of the 'arctic' curve of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions in its disordered regime is addressed. It is well-known that in the scaling limit the model exhibits phase-separation, with regions of order and disorder sharply separated by a smooth curve, called the arctic curve. To find this curve, we study a multiple integral representation for the em...

In this paper, we develop some stationary iterative schemes in block forms for solving double saddle point problem. To this end, we first generalize the Jacobi iterative method and study its convergence under certain condition. Moreover, using a relaxation parameter, the weighted version  of the Jacobi method together with its convergence analysis are considered. Furthermore, we extend a method...

A relaxed splitting preconditioner based on matrix splitting is introduced in this paper for linear systems of saddle point problem arising from numerical solution of the incompressible NavierStokes equations. Spectral analysis of the preconditioned matrix is presented, and numerical experiments are carried out to illustrate the convergence behavior of the preconditioner for solving both steady...

Nilsson et al. have recently shown how a velocity field in geostrophic and hydrostatic balance in an f -plane may be diagnosed from prescribed distributions of buoyancy and wind stress, in a basin with closed isobaths. I extend their analysis to cover basins with more complex depth contours, treating in particular the behavior of the flow in the presence of a saddle point.

We analyze an infinite dimensional, geometrically constrained shape optimization problem for magnetically driven microswimmers (locomotors) in three-dimensional (3-D) Stokes flow and give a well-posed descent scheme for computing optimal shapes. The problem is inspired by recent experimental work in this area. We show the existence of a minimizer of the optimization problem using analytical too...

We present the theory of liquid bridges between two axisymmetric solids, sphere and plane, with prescribed contact angles in a general setup, when the solids are non-touching, touching or intersecting, We give a detailed derivation of expressions for curvature, volume and surface area of pendular ring as functions of the filling angle ψ for all available types of menisci: catenoid Cat, sphere S...
