Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the bladder is a rare and devastating malignancy, usually associated with Schistosoma haematobium, particularly in bilharzia-endemic regions sub-Saharan Africa. Little written about condition pregnancy.
A 21-year-old Gravida 2 Para 1 at 28 weeks gestation presented worsening symptoms dysuria, increased frequency micturition, backache, painful suprapubic ma...

The effect of polyparasite infections on cytokine and chemokine responses as well as the effect of antiparasite treatment was studied in children without parasite infection (the G0 group), in children singly infected with Schistosoma haematobium (the G1 group), and in children multiply infected with S. haematobium/Schistosoma mansoni, Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar, and Necator american...

BACKGROUND Group 2 Innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) are innate cells that produce the TH2 cytokines IL-5 and IL-13. The importance of these cells has recently been demonstrated in experimental models of parasitic diseases but there is a paucity of data on ILC2s in the context of human parasitic infections and in particular of the blood dwelling parasite Schistosoma haematobium. METHODOLOGY/PRINC...

OBJECTIVE To predict the spatial distributions of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni infections to assist planning the implementation of mass distribution of praziquantel as part of an on-going national control programme in Tanzania. METHODS Bayesian geostatistical models were developed using parasitological data from 143 schools. RESULTS In the S. haematobium models, although land surf...

As of 16 May 2014, eleven cases (six from France and five from Germany) of uro-genital schistosomiasis have been reported. All cases were exposed to the same natural swimming area in southern Corsica without known exposure to fresh water in an endemic area of Schistosoma. This is the first locally acquired infections of Schistosoma haematobium in France. The disease is known to be very focal in...

Methods and materials A multidisciplinary study was conducted in two neighboring rural communities in northern Senegal, where S. mansoni and S. haematobium are co-endemic (n=857). Kato-Katz and urine filtration were used for microscopic detection of the respective Schistosoma species. Households were located using handheld differential global positioning system in the largest community (n=599),...

Schistosoma kisumuensis n. sp. is described based on 6 adult males and 2 adult females collected from the circulatory system of 3 murid rodent species, Pelomys isseli, Mastomys natalensis, and Dasymys incomtus. Specimens were collected from a single location, Nyabera Swamp, in Kisumu, Kenya in the Lake Victoria Basin. This new species is morphologically similar to members of the S. haematobium ...

Schistosomiasis is a debilitating parasitic disease caused by platyhelminthes of the genus Schistosoma, notably Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma haematobium, and Schistosoma japonicum. Pioneer researchers used radiation-attenuated (RA) schistosome larvae to immunize laboratory rodent and non-human primate hosts. Significant and reproducible reduction in challenge worm burden varying from 30% to...

Some patients with Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium infections were shown to have soluble schistosomal antigen in their plasma. Antibody to this antigen and to other antigens of adult worms were also present. These findings may be relevant to schistosomal-related immune-complex disease, especially the nephrotic syndrome.

This is an unusual case of total granulomatous infarction of testis due to Schistosoma haematobium, the first such case to be reported. This report reinforces the theory of extraportal maturation of worms in spermatic veins and capillaries as postulated earlier (Joshi, 1962).
